Should I drop out of University and go to Community College?

It's a tough decision for me and I'd really appreciate any insight and shared experience.

I'm 19, a rising sophomore and I go to a local university called GMU (george mason uni.) about 20 minutes away from where I live. I had a rough year and got some pretty dreadful grades despite the fact I was a good 3.8 student in high school. I was also going through depression because my former girlfriend and later on my grandfather both passed away and I probably became ill with a stomach ulcer as a result of this too.

After screwing up first semester, I tried to boost up my GPA second semester, unfortunately it wasn't enough, and its still below 2.0. The problem is that I have 18 transfer credits from high school AP Classes and 5 credits from a community college on my transcript which puts me with a lot of credits and a low GPA. The high amount of credits I have, and the low GPA puts me in the category of suspension. My transfer credits don't boost my GPA, and I've only attempted 26 credits at GMU. Hypothetically, if I didn't have any transfer credits, I would be in the category of academic probation instead (only can take 13 credits). It's shocking to me and I feel like a failure because I've never been suspended in my life before, but I'm also too stubborn to go back into despair and depression.

Suspension means that I cannot return in the Fall semester of my sophomore year, and then when I do in the Spring, I can only take a mere 13 credits at max (probation). This will delay my graduation, set me way behind in my major because I will have to retake classes to bolster my GPA, and I will have a low GPA. Also during Suspension period, policy states that I cannot get credit for any courses taken at other colleges.

Right now, I am going to meet with my academic adviser to try and appeal for an override of the suspension to the academic affairs committee. I would have to make documented visits to my adviser, complete an academic skills program, and there are other factors like credits, GPA, timing (I'm doing this ASAP), etc. Also I'm hoping I have a chance because my GPA is .01 away from not being on suspension.

Considering if my appeal fails, and I am suspended.

Should I just go to Community College (NOVA/NVCC)??? If I go to CC, I feel that I would save my parents a lot more money and be able to start over with clean slate because I wouldn't have to retake so many classes. I could possibly transfer to Virginia Tech or maybe University of Maryland - College Park (I got into both of these schools after applying in HS, would that help in transferring?). If I take classes during the summer this year, Fall and Spring semester at NVCC (Northern VA CC) I could transfer but it won't be guaranteed unless I get an Associates. Also, if I choose to go to CC and transfer, would the universities I apply to look at and factor in my transcript at GMU? Would that hurt my chance of admission? Would applying to graduate school in the future be affected by my bad GMU transcript and/or going to CC?

I'm conflicted and not exactly sure of what I should do in this scenario.

PS. If anyone was wondering, my major is computer science or systems engineering.

Meet with the school and talk seriously with them about what would be best.

Frankly, it might be best to go to a CC and then transfer back. You have had quite a bit to deal with in the last year, and it would be good to get yourself emotionally healthy again, so that you can move forward.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You have been through a lot. Life is full of ups and downs. It’s what we do with them that matters.

Hi, I’m in the same boat as you were right now. I was wondering what you ended up doing?

^The OP only made the one post, so they haven’t been active for 2 years.
