Hi, I’d like to start off by saying I just turned 16 and I’m still in 8th grade. I’ve been through quite a rough patch recently with a plethora of issues; every one in my household excluding myself has either cancer/heart disease among other illnesses is one particular example. I’m currently being homeschooled, but it hasn’t been working out.

I would like to eventually attend college. I’m not sure of my major yet, like most people my age. However, I’m not sure of the best route to get there. Should I go to high school and be emotionally taxed for four additional years? Or should I get GED and attend a local college at 16? I’m inclined to drop out, yet I’m afraid of “ruining my life” as most have led me to believe. My area is very poor for education and it may be hard to fit in due to my age. “Kids can be harsh”, they say.

Given the circumstances, would you advise dropping out? Please, feel free to weigh in.

yeah get your ged and attend a local college if you want to try continuing with education. do that before enroll in a high school somewhere for sure. there’s so many things that are better about local colleges. they don’t require attendance, you can take as many or as few units as you want, there won’t be any issues over fitting in, in fact you might meet some nice people. there’s really no good arguments for the high school path. people might say, maybe you need more time before college, maybe you aren’t ready, but you’re not really someone that applies to. there is no rush to start, you can start whenever, so i’m not sure you’ll be messing up your life very much by going later rather than sooner. you probably do want to get your ged and have that out of the way though. i’d say forget the traditional route. of course you shouldn’t go to high school and be emotionally taxed for four additional years! that’s absurd, whatever anyone else says don’t do it.

I think you should definitely drop out and do your GED. You should never have to attend school being nervous about whether you get to see your family members after school or not.
