I will fail physics at this rate with Gekelman. Should I take the W transcript notation, recoup, and then tackle physics once again later?

Bump. I’m not quite failing, but somehow I doubt I will do better on the final just cause of the exam questions. At the current rate, I’m just barely “passing”. Is it worth it to tack on another C (or lower) when I already had two C’s from last quarter? (I’m trying to get into engineering btw).

Physics is pretty hefty in units (5). If you need it for your core curriculum, stick with it; a C in a lower division class may be the extra incentive you need to boost up your ambitions for next quarter. However, if you are trying to get into engineering, getting a C in physics is not the most optimistic sign that you will do well in engineering courses (even though we all know that lower divs do not dictate the success rate in upper divs).

Overall note: If you have a history of Cs, getting a W on your transcript “looks” worse than just getting a C; makes one think that you were in danger of failing or worse. Trying to petition into engineering will be slightly difficult but not impossible if you have good grades to balance out the quarter.

Should I take the W then? My last quarter was awesome, but it has gone to the pits this quarter. What I plan to do if I do drop it is to constantly do more problems during spring and summer first session, and then take it over again in the second session of summer.

I hear that Financial aid checks for full time status on 4th week, so it wouldn’t affect me in that regard if I drop this class and go down to 11 units. But, I would be under the cumulative progress criteria set every two quarters. This will in turn force me to go under a contract to graduate in four years. However, I might wish to take a fifth year in order to take a language course all the way to the maximum possible. What then?

If I don’t drop, my gpa will be decimated by the failing grade, so that’s for the best right?

coldness, are you in engineering? If you are, being able to petition for a withdrawl may be slim due to Boelter Hall being fairly strict with drop deadlines. Also, are you doing so poorly that there is no way to salvage your grade? I took a look at the 1A midterm that was posted up on the ask engineering thread, and it looks to be a fairly outside the box midterm;interesting and more difficult than the average 1a midterm.

Everyone always has plans to study more in the other quarters if they drop a class, but it almost never works out. Financial aid worries are not a problem; if you drop a course and go below units once, there’s nothing held against you. However, are you constantly under the unit minimum? People are not usually under contract unless they take the bare minimum of units every quarter (or close to it).

Once again, are you sure you will fail? Because I highly advocate not taking the W for a 1a course.

Most grades can be salvaged with a good final grade. You have a almost two full weeks - try and pull through it.

His midterms are way too conceptual for me it seems. I think I’ll definitely fail since i got around 20 points out of 110 points with an average of 70. On the first midterm, I got 60 with an average of 83 points. These numbers definitely mean fail don’t they?

I’m a chemistry major, by the way.

This late into the quarter, I don’t think you can successfully petition to withdraw…

Even if I obtain Gekelman’s signature to withdraw, they will deny it?

I think with the scores you posted up, you can get a B-/C+ if you do well on the final (if the final is a large percentage of your grade). However, I can see why you would be worried considering the trend of your test scores. Since you’re college of letters/science, you can probably drop it relatively easily. You seem to have made up your mind, so I hope you do it soon because I am not sure how forgiving the office will be about granting Ws well within 9th/10th week.

if u can get a C stay, if u can’t drop it and get a W.
