Should I drop Spanish (I have a B-)?

I went to a magnet school for most of my life, but this year I made a switch to the public school system. The spanish curriculum was kind of weird … and somehow I got placed in Spanish III honors even though it was my second year taking spanish (I should be in Spanish II). Well, anyways, I did horrible. First quarter I got a 75, but I was able to improve, and this quarter I have an 88. My semester grade is an 82, and the semester ends in a few days. I REALLY do not want an 82 on my transcript, so I am contemplating dropping the course. I don’t know if I can do that so close to the end of the semester. If I can, I was wondering if dropping a course will affect my chances of getting into a good college (I want to go to Wesleyan, and colleges similar). This year (10th) I am taking 3 APs and 4 honors classes … and I am doing well in all of them except Spanish. Please let me know what you think! Thanks!

I don’t know much about Wesleyan specifically, but I know most competitive schools want to see four years of a continuous language, even if they don’t require it. I’d see if you could drop down to Spanish II.

Wesleyan specifically tracks which applicants have completed 4 years of foreign language (as well as Bio/Chem/Physics and Calculus), so it’s quite important to them.

It depends what happens when you drop a course. At my high school, it goes on your transcript still and appears as a HUGE red flag to a college (because it implies you’re getting a D or an F). A “B-” is much superior to a dropped class at my high school. I would as your counselor and see what his/her thoughts are. I recommend to not drop the class; it’ll only look worse.
