Should I drop this class/take it pass-fail? Help!

The class is Intro to Microeconomics at JHU. I am a freshman.
The deadline to take a class pass/fail is 2moro the 30th.
I just got my first exam back and I got an F! A D was equal to 40 points and I got 36....

I am only taking 12 credits so I can not withdraw from the course. However, I do have the option of taking it pass fail so if I do get a D in the course, it wont screw up my GPA.

However, the prof did say that people do much better on the final than the midterm and the final is worth a lot more. My TA section is worth 25%.

Um...here's the catch--if I take Microeconomics pass/fail then I simply cant be an International Studies major anymore...and I want to be lol. I will have to do History or Political Science or whatever.

I just dont know what to do and it's too late to talk to anyone in depth. Is it worth having a potentially low GPA??

oh my goodness, someone please chime in soon :(

do it letter grade. keep your options open. if P/F means that you wont be able to do what you want, then why would you do that?

study as hard you can and try for a C or even a B

I would do pass/fail personally if you’re having that difficult of a time.

If it means you can’t stick with your current major though, a letter grade would probably be best.

I’ve decided to take it pass/fail. It would relieve a lot of stress…I seriously just dont like economics.

“do it letter grade. keep your options open. if P/F means that you wont be able to do what you want, then why would you do that?”

Because if I dont, my GPA might be a 2.5. Is that pretty? I would then feel like the rest of my years in college would be spent trying to pull up my freshmen year GPA. Also, there are other things that I want to do…history, politics…film studies lol.

Actually, I’ll decide in the morning. Keep the responses coming pretty please! Any advice would be appreciated.

At UCLA, a Pass is an equivalent of C or better. Not Passed is anything lower than a C. Please make sure how your Pass/Not Passed grading is done.

Also, can you retake the class and improve your GPA that way? Some colleges will replace your first grade with the second grade; other colleges take the average grade. In order to retake a class at my school, a C- or below is required.

yes, i have the option of retaking the class (C+ or below) omg i dont know what to do.

and passing is a C or better.

However, I need a GPA of a 3.5 in order to participate in a program my junior year…I won’t have a chance to retake the course by the time i apply.

My vote would have been for you to drop the class. That is always the fail safe to getting past possible bad grades. Why can’t you drop it? Do you have to have so many hours for your financial aid? Can you drop it and then make up the credits another time, maybe in the summer? Make sure that dropping the class is absolutely out of the question.

I think that doing the pass fail thing is a bad idea only because you want to stay in that major that requires it. Are you sure that getting a bad grade in the class will not get you in trouble with that major in a similar way? If you get a D in that particular class will it make it close to impossible to stay in international studies?

So, you need to ask yourself if there is any possible way that you can do better in the class later on. The options of taking the class later if you do get a bad grade is a smart one. While you might be worried about getting a grade, the pass/fail will definitely make it so that you are out of your major, so going that route really sounds like a mistake. If you think that you can possibly get a C then you should stick it out. Find someone that had the class before and see what pointers they can give you. Good luck!

if i get an F, i can retake the course…but I am at the bare min. of credits (dont comment on why this is bad. i was taking a class but had to drop it leaving me with 12.5) so if i fail, i will be a part-time student and i will lose my scholarship.
i will get C- or better in this course. I have no choice.

In everything else I am doing okay so if I get a C- in Micro, I will probably have a 3.1.

I’m so scared :(

Background info:

Last semester in Macro, I got:
first midterm worth 20%-- D- (freaked out)
second midterm worth 30%-- B-
Final worth 40%- idk
Section grade worth 10%- idk.

My average in the end was a C+.

I was so scared after my first macro test. I was really happy that I did jump from a D- to a B- even as the professor noted that the material got harder.
I learned from my mistakes and I learned the teachers style…my current professor uses a lot of questions from old exams…I should probably study old final exams.

I went to the prof and he had me go to the board and explain certain problems. He then stated “well you’re obviously not an idiot…this score doesn’t reflect what you actually know”
I gained an extra 7 points so I’m in a more comfortable range.
I got a tutor and a study consultant. About to kick it into full gear.
