currently a junior in China:
SAT1 - 2320 ; Math -800; CR- 740; Writing - 780
SAT2 - MATH2 - 800; Physcis - 800; Chem - 790
GPA : my current school in Beijing does not do GPA, but i am top 5% of my class.
while i was an exchange student in D.C. for a year, i got 3.96 (UW). it was one of the most prestigious private schools in America.
plus i took AP chem and got 5 on the test during the year. (too bad that we don't have access to APs here in China. )

I was selected by an exchange program in China. the program was trying to select future leaders who can promote cultural exchange and understanding between vastly different countries. it offers scholarships to the best private schools in the states. and i was living with three host families in a foreign country at age 16.
i wrote about my "foreign adventures" on a blog, which is popular among several schools in Beijing.

-elected class president.

-chief editor of yearbook.

-an avid writer and have won national awards for writing.

-chief editor of a school newspaper and a popular school magazine.

-in young writers' organization (a nationwide organization for gifted writers) for two years and was recently elected president.

and i am doing an engineering project over the summer, and i am going to teach at a middle school in a rural part of china.

i am applying to SEAS and not applying for FA

chance me pls! should i apply ED? will applying ED increase my chance of getting in?

i would apply ED, increases your chances a lot, and you’ll need that being international

theres no school called SEAS at cornell, its just engineering

your activities dont seem like they match with engineering at all, seems like you’re really interested in writing and such. perhaps CAS would be a better match

cornell likes to see that applicants interests match with the major/school they apply to

thanks i think it’s a good point.
but the problem is that i don’t think anyone would actually have lots of engineering experience before college - that’s when they should start engineering.

what are the engineering activities? Math League, maybe?

If you can afford it (you say you can) and it’s your first choice (is it? Would you choose it over any other school, even Harvard?), then go right ahead. Just make sure in your essays you emphasize why you want to study whatever it is (engineering in this case) and why Cornell is a fit for you. From what I’ve gathered, it seems Cornell is tired of getting HYP’s leftovers, and wants kids who really would rather be at Cornell. It doesn’t always happen, but they’re going for fit a lot more it seems than some other schools.

^oh, no. i am not really into HYP. and i don’t really get why everyone wants to go there - they are not necessarily the most SUITABLE school for everyone.
but to be honest, all the ivies and schools of the same level have the reputation of getting HYP leftovers. so i guess it’s not only cornell.
thanks anyways. i am a more outdoorsy and “nature” type of person, so cornell is perfect for me with its beautiful campus.

yeah, i’d say math and science type stuff shows your interest. your engineering project is a good start.

i just saw a lot of writing stuff so it looked like you would be an english major or something
