Should I enroll as undeclared or Math:CS

I was accepted as undeclared but applied for CS as my 1st major and Comp. Eng. as 2nd. If choose to go to UCSD, should I go as undeclared and take CS classes then apply for CS after I’ve taken the required classes (they say you can do this on their website) or go as a Math:Computer Science major instead?

I’ve been accepted to Purdue for CS but I want to keep UCSD as an option

Hey I’m in the same situation as you. Applied for Cs/C.Eng got in undeclared.
Is the major change to math:cs possible now? I don’t see any option to select an unimpacted major. The only option seems to be to switch to a major of your choice after you are done with one quarter.
Where is the option to change the major? Can’t you join undeclared and apply for what you want later?

@magicalpony‌ Yes because its not impacted

Also, I’d email admission on how to select it

You could always select Math:CS as your primary major before school starts, then apply to CS in the Jacobs School during the application period.

I think shortly after you SIR, you obtain access to TritonLink. However, you can switch to a nonimpacted major as soon or as late as you like without any issues.

Are you saying you are offered a math/cs joint major? That is an excellent major and I would take it. My dd did that, although she went to grad school in CS and was well prepared.

@groverrohan‌ @BrownParent‌ so if I want to join UCSD, should I enter undeclared and then apply for CS/Math - CS or should I select an alternate major major now(is that possible)?

I think you have to go in as what you are accepted to if you are not admitted to your first 2 choices, but ask the college, not here.

@magicalpony‌ You don’t really have to worry about it before school starts

Math/CS is non impacted so you can select it now

I don’t think you can select anything now if your major is undeclared. I don’t see any option for it. I think major change only happens once you have joined and completed the required courses.

@groverrohan‌ Isn’t that what you were trying to say?

You can select a non impacted major before you began your semester

@Dhruv97‌ Is it possible to do that online? Or do you have to do it once you join?

@magicalpony‌ i think you have to enroll and pay the deposit. Try emailing/calling admissions office for a thorough explaination

It doesn’t matter if you choose the Math/CS major (or any other non-impacted major) now before you enroll or in the fall after you start classes or next year when you’re in your second year. Switching into a non-impacted major takes a couple of clicks and you can do it all online. Whether you have access to do it now or you have to wait until you enroll or you have to wait until you start classes or whatever really does not matter. Doing it now or later will not make a difference. And you can switch around between non-impacted majors as much as you want.

If you want to apply into the CS program, then you have to take the prerequisite courses. You can do this as an undeclared major or a Math/CS major or an anything else major. It doesn’t matter. No major is binding. You can switch in and out of any non-impacted majors. For impacted majors, you have to apply to get in but you can always switch out.

Whether or not you should go to UCSD without a guarantee of your major of choice (computer science) is a different question, and it’s really a personal decision. CS has only been an impacted major recently and no one can really give you the odds of getting accepted into it. It depends on how many open spots they have and who’s applying to be accepted. I would recommend (for the purposes of choosing colleges) to assume that you won’t get into the computer science major. You may, and that would be great! But you might not, and you have to still be happy at UCSD even if you aren’t in the computer science program. So I think the question you should be asking is (if all other things are equal) if you didn’t get into the computer science major, would you still want to be at UCSD? Or would you rather be at a different school in your major of choice?

@baktrax‌ your last sentence is why I’m sort of leaning towards purdue. Also hoping that I get in UCLA/UCB for my major

And that’s a completely fair thing to do. When I went to UCSD, the biology majors were impacted, and if I hadn’t gotten into the biology department as a freshman, I probably wouldn’t have gone to UCSD. There’s nothing wrong with that. Being able to study what you want to study is part of choosing a school that is a good academic fit.

Guys could you please help me out. I got accepted into undeclared physical sciences in UCSD but i actually want to change to CS . Is this possible? Please explain in detail as i dont know what an impacted and not impacted major is . Thanks

@astro9999‌ an impacted major is a major that is very competitive this year and they are full, so you cannot choose to enroll in that major. You would have to choose from a non-impacted major

Here is a list of all majors; ones with asterisks are impacted, including CS

The only way to get into the CS major is by enrolling as undeclared or into a non impacted major and then applying for the CS major once you have taken the required CS classes and maintaining a high GPA. But there is no guarantee that you will be given a spot for CS
