Should I even apply to Princeton?

I don't want to waste $$ on an application, so realistically, should I apply?

You seem to have quite a few number of Bs and lack any real strength in the EC department. Your SAT Reasoning and SAT 2s are good, but not good enough to compensate for the other deficincies in your app. And the “hooks” that you listed really aren’t hooks at all.

This isn’t to say that you don’t have that “5% chance” at Princeton, but I really wouldn’t say that your chances are higher than that.

Dude, I agree with you on the B’s and stuff but I’m the president of 4 different organizations…can you get a better EC “department” than that…

EC’s are def. my strong point.

Just because you are a club president doesn’t mean you do anything. Not saying you don’t, but lots of people say as ECs they are members of 5 clubs and that doesn’t really mean anything.

I agree with the previous poster.

First, you need to keep in mind that just being the president of a club within your school won’t add that much weight onto your application. What you need is regional, state, or national recognition of your achievements within that club, or else all you really have is that glorified laundry list.

Your extracurriculars are, in my opinion, weak. Here’s why:

Ethnic-based clubs like SAASA, Jewish Club, etc. are some of the most useless additions to a resume. They are far too common, and have not outlet for awards and recognition.

Academic based clubs like Science Club or History Club (or in your case, Math and Literature Club), are pretty much just as useless as the ethnic clubs. Unless you are apart of some outrageous nationwide competition or are a IMO medalist, I doubt you’ve done nothing more than go to weekly meetings.

Model United Nations, an old-time favorite, is a step in the right direction. But, seeing as you come from the state of Virginia, I naturally am curious to find out at what conferences you won your two Best Delegate awards. Was it at a nationally recognized, university-sponsored conference like ILMUNC or NAIMUN? Or are we talking more along the lines of VAMUN?

What’s your rank?

Your ECs are definitely strong and it will certainly only help you to be involved with and hold leadership positions in so many clubs. However, from what I gather, universities often look for a passion that defines you - something you can really boast about and that you have been successful in. Like the posts before me…national recognition in an academic organization, featured in a renowned literature publication, extremely dedicated to a unique sport or activity (with awards/credentials to show).

My rank if 24/569. And I won my two awards in different places. One was in JHMUNC (John’s Hopkins) and the other in (WMMUNC) William and mary.

All those clubs that I listed, I put a lot of time and effort in. I’ve been to several inter-national Muslim Conferences with MSA, which I founded, we were also endowed by the State of VA.

I won the Academic Team state championships, and for science club, I perform 2 dissections per month at a local university, to college students.

Anyways, my main question is, doesn’t Princeton disregard freshman grades?

Quick question: Is the 3.6 disregarding freshman year?

Anyway, IMO, you have absolutely no chance. I don’t mean to be harsh, but you have no outside-school ECs whatsoever. Those are an absolute must for top tier schools.

Yeah what’s your GPA UW w/o Freshman grades?

I think summer residential gov school is out of school…it’s an internship with NIH.

3.85 UW 4.3 W w/o freshman grades.

I’ve had a job at a kiosk in teh mall for the last 4 years.

Summer Resd. Gov SChool is an out of school actiivty.

450 hours volunteered at local hosp.

Still not enough though. Your GPA looks good; I also messed up freshman year so I guess you and I are in the same boat. The Bs junior year will hurt. good luck

Yeah even w/o freshman year, I think I need to be somewhere in the 3.9-4.0 UW GPA range, which sucks.

Junior year was a toughie.

I’ll give it a shot. Vandy, Georgetown, and UVA are my 2nd choicesss:)

lol…davidoga: absolutely no chance?

that’s way too harsh and not true at all. nobody has no chance at all. B’s junior year will hurt but they won’t kill your chances. Your EC’s are a little spread out and you don’t have much outside school EC’s but you still have a shot.
