Should I even apply to them? What are my chances?

Hello everyone, Happy New Year.
Im a childhood education major at my local community college (Onondaga Community College) I hope to become a elementary teacher. I decided not to transfer until I receive my associates degree, so I'll have 64 credits before I transfer. Im thinking about applying to top schools and I only have one safety, here are somethings about myself and the schools Im thinking about applying to:

Im an African American Male
will have a 3.3-3.4 GPA when applying to transfer.
Already have 3 professors that said they'll write me excellent recommendations.

My EC's are (volunteering and 1 club):

Volunteering in hospital from 2004 to present
Soup Kitchen 2005 to present
Meals On Wheels 2005 to present
Elementary School volunteer 2004 to present
College Tutor 2007
Future Educators club 2007 to present

The schools im thinking about applying to are:

Princeton University
Brown University
Columbia University
Oswego State university (safety)
Syracuse University
North Carolina University at Chapel Hill
Duke University
Michigan University Ann Arbor
Emory University
Virginia Tech University
Cornell University

I looked on there websites and most of them say they accept a minimum of a 2.8 GPA to get into their education program but what do you think my chances really are? I just dont want to spend unnecessary money on applications.

Any thoughts will be highly appreciated...thanks :-)

If you want me to be honest:

Slim chance - Brown, Columbia, Duke, Cornell (Princeton does not accept transfers)
Possible - UNC, UM, Emory
Good shot - OSU, VT, Syracuse

I would advise that you look through the transfer acceptance rates, either in this forum or at collegeboard.com to get a feel for selectivity.

Best of luck :)

Princeton University - Does not accept transfers
Brown University - No chance
Columbia University - No chance
Oswego State university - Match
Syracuse University - Match
North Carolina University at Chapel Hill - Reach
Duke University - No Chance
Michigan University Ann Arbor - High Reach
Emory University - High Reach
Virginia Tech University - Low Reach
Cornell University - No Chance

Columbia and, I’m presuming most schools of similar caliber, use 3.5 as an unofficial minimum for GPA. You need to have a reality check with some of these schools, as most successful transfers have a 3.5-4.0 and apply from competitive universities, not community colleges. Barring divine intervention, I mostly agree with Twenty8.

hey mike! wat’s up… I got to Onondaga Community College as well!
Nice to see someone from our school…so driven…

Oswego is an easy safety… mine is SU!
I am going to leave my e-mail add in your private inbox

Au revoir!
