I really like Brown, it seems like a great school but it seems like I’m below what they accept so I’m wondering if I should even apply. I have already filled out the common app though…

My essays are good.
I’m not a minority or first generation.

I’m not a specialist so I won’t be able to chance you, but my advice is to apply anyway (unless you’re really really short on money).

There’s always people telling other people that they don’t stand a chance and that they shouldn’t apply (which is not even your case I don’t think). Don’t listen to them. What do you have to risk? 70$? I think it’s a good price to pay in order to have a shot at Brown, of the nation’s best uni.

Even though odds may seem against you (again, I am not implying that this is your case, or the opposite for that matter), even if it seems like a really long reach, even if your chances seem slim, give it a go. Every year, quite a few people that most people would have bet again get in. What if it was you?

What do you have to lose? I believe the mid-range of their SAT scores for admitted applicants is 1980, and for ACT, 29-33. If you convey you bring something unique to the table through your essays, that would probably be even better. Of course, none of us know.

PS I got a 1950 on the SAT, too and I’m applying.

If you have the application by all means apply. Admissions aren’t about numbers and I you can convey something unique or write a strong essay you never know. Your scores and GPA will put you at a disadvantage but you still have a chance

The middle 50% of brown have a 1980 - 2310. So with a 1950 you fall just short of the middle 50% - somewhere in the bottom 25%. That being said, I would encourage you to apply if you believe you have a really good essay and ECs / leadership positions that would help you stand out. Although, I would say not to get your hopes up too much – your 3.5 GPA is low for Ivy league.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the hopeful answers but the realistic ones are more useful (thanksNYU2013). I’m still kinda on the fence, but I’m thinking I won’t because $70 is pricey. More opinions are welcome though…

As NYU2013 said, the bottom 25% of Brown accepted students are about where your SAT scores fall. But, remember that that means 25% of accepted students had your SAT scores or lower! Your numbers aren’t as good as some other people’s, but what’s $70 when it comes to looking at your future and what school you end up at? Also, I think there may be application fee waivers if you demonstrate financial need. There’s absolutely no harm in applying.

hey I’m in your same boat my stats are pretty similar and when I come on this website I get really discouraged sometimes when I see people with like 36’s on their ACT and fifty extra curricular activities and like Nobel prizes and stuff lol… But I think if not for any other reason you should apply because you need to know… You don’t wanna look back and say “what if I had applied…” Even if you don’t get in at least you’ll know that Brown wasn’t the path you were meant to go down… Just my two cents.
