i am going to be a senior next year at a very prestigious school in Pennsylvania, and would like to know my chances at these following colleges:

Grinnell
Haverford
The College of the Holy Cross
Wesleyan
Colby
Bates
Oberlin
Kenyon
Middlebury (ED)
Williams
Amherst
- also if anyone could recommend any further colleges that would be great!*

-I am Hispanic; first generation American; and go to a grade deflating hs in which i have received a 3.3-3.4/ 4.0
-I have played football and golf and am a member of the minority culture club.
-My SATs were 1920 but that should be highly improved by next year.
-I have taken a majority of my school’s honors and ap courses and have done fairly well with them.
-I will have great teacher and counselor recommendations and have done 100 hours of community service throughout my HS time.
What are my odds at these schools?

If you don’t apply, you will never know.

Your SAT and GPA are low but your URM status will help you, though I’m not sure if it will balance out that much. Retake the SAT and see where you stand. You have a good chance at most of the schools listed, though Williams and Amherst will be reaches.

do you think then that i should use ed on middlebury
ive got a 33 on act if that helps

i mean i’m kind of hoping the URM will work out, but i work hard and have faced a lot of adversity so i think that should help?

only do ED if you are 100% sure you will attend Middlebury if accepted. remember, it is binding. Amherst (15.0%), Williams (20.6%), Wesleyan (21.9%), and Middlebury (22.0%) will be the toughest on your list to get into.

have you looked at Bowdoin, another NESCAC school and rival of Colby and Bates?

well i would absolutely LOVE to go to middlebury but do you think i would have a good shot a bowdoin?
(and for some reason the average gpa from my school to wesleyan is only a 3.2 with 20 acceptances?)

like do you think that besides those 4 that the rest i have a really good shot, and middlebury in ed?

and if anyone would be able to help me with the process(i.e advice on essays and whatnot) that would be greatly appreciated…my counselor is a bit of a racist so he has not helped me at all with the applications

traditionally middlebury has a very low yield among its URM applicants, so it must accept a higher proportion of them. assuming you get decent board scores (>1900) i’d say you have a good shot.

Hey there. I also applied to a few colleges on your list (Midd, Amherst, Bowdoin) and can hopefully give you some insight. Since these schools are small Liberal Arts colleges, they try to place more emphasis on the individual – not test scores. I was accepted to all three schools, and I noticed that not everyone who was accepted had stellar grades. They were just the type of kids who worked hard and had passions that set them apart from the rest of the applicant pool. When writing your essays, just be sure to let your individual personality, hopes, aspirations, etc, shine through. These colleges want to know what you have to offer to their community. It’s a holistic process – don’t get hung up on just your GPA and SATs. However, see if you can bump up your SAT a little. Then again, you might not need to because your ACT score is great; I got into these schools with a 31 on my ACT. Don’t be discouraged and good luck. I would be happy to help with anything else.

Also, have you heard of QuestBridge? I would check it out; that program is what got me interested in these schools in the first place. Quite a few of the schools you are interested in applying to are among the QuestBridge Partnership Schools. What you do is fill out an application, much like a college application, before a certain date. If you meet qualifications, you are designated as a Finalist. As a Finalist, you can send that application early (november-ish) to any of the Partnership Schools (up to 8, I think). You rank those schools based on preferences. If you get into any of those schools (you find out in December), you are bound to the school you ranked highest (for example, if you were accepted to your number 3 and 4 choices, you would be bound to #3). If you use the National College Match, “The College Match offers full four-year scholarships covering tuition, room and board for high-achieving low-income students. All College Match scholarships cover 100% of demonstrated financial need and are loan-free.”

If you don’t want the binding aspect, which I didn’t, you don’t have to apply to the schools early. Instead, you can apply regular decision still using your QuestBridge application. You only have to send in extra supplements. A major plus is that your application fees are waived when you use QuestBridge.

I think you have a decent shot with an ACT score of 33. At Midd, ou can submit only your ACT score. Write a great essay, keep your grades up, and get excellent rec letters!

can anyone give me other schools to apply to, or would you think these are a suitable fit?

hawkman: only you can decide if these are a suitable fit. do you like their size? location? programs/majors offered? in terms of getting in, raise your SAT a bit and you have a legitimate shot at them.

it seems you have a well-represented list of the top LACs… at this point I would ask for safety suggestions, if anything. I would add a safety or two to the list… a school you have a 99% chance of getting in to. none of the schools on your list are even close to safeties. if you’re okay eliminating a few schools, that would be quite alright also. I’ve seen too many people on this site apply to way too many schools just for the sake of doing it, and it’s pretty silly.

well yes, i do believe that all of these are the type of college that i would like to attend. which do you personally believe that i would have the best shot of these on my list

You only have to send your ACT to Amherst too. A 33 is great!

does anyone believe that i have a GOOD chance at either williams, midd, or amherst colleges?

I think you have an excellent chance at Bates and Colby. The Maine colleges are really looking for ethnic diversity.

hawkman–only an adcom can give you the answer you’re looking for. Apply to these schools and see where the cards fall. Just make sure you apply to some safety schools.

I agree with arcadia. There’s no way to know which schools you will or will not get into. I was taken by surprise by my rejections, WLs, and admittances. Just apply and see what happens. But yes, throw some safeties in there as well.

thank you all very much…so should my list be revised to
midd
bates
colby
bowdoin?
williams/amherst
haverford
and then two safeties?
