Should I even apply?

Hi I am a male, from virginia. I came to US four years ago from Iran because of religious toleration here. I could not gain any education higher than high school there. When I came here I started working my tail off in school, because I could LEARN MORE HERE! So here is my stats:

I am a rising IB senior. I have taken the most hard core classes my school offers.

I only know one of my predicted score for IB HL Bio which is a 6.

I rank 1/401 in my high school: I have to mention my HS is not very competitive; at least not to me.

My GPA weighted is 4.65 and unweighted is I think 3.92 or 3.93 IDK! We go by weighted here.

My SAT scores are horrible because of my lack of experience with English language.

CR is in 500's but I believe I will be in mid 600's next time I take it.
Math is 660, but I'll improve again
Writing the same...

I know my SAT is not that good, but SAT isn't the only factor. I am re-taking it and have dedicated my entire summer reading novels after novels to learn more English. I can definitly improve my math and bring it to the 50% range like 700's.

My SAT II scores are Math I 680 and World History 690. I know they're not outstanding but good enough? I just took them not thinking where I wanted to go; silly I know.

As far as Extraculs:

A list of clubs like NHS, World History, Chess, Academic, etc
My chess team won the regional once (im VP)
Varsity Cross country
Rescue Squad member (love it!!)
ESL teacher (I hold almost 5 days a week to teach kids english since I know its importance)

I am the first generation of my family to attend college as well.
Low-income family as well; I was considering Questbridge but I was afraid I end up somewhere I do not want to go!

I thank you in advance!

WOW am I that bad of a student for MIT? dang!!

No, you’re not ‘that bad’ a student, it’s just that most people ignore topics like yours because the answer is, in every case, ‘if you really like the school, then apply’, your stats shouldn’t (and generally won’t) rule you out, especially from applying.

There should be no monetary concern because fee waivers are easy to obtain if you can get your counselor to say you have need. Time spent doing the application shouldn’t be the concern if you really want to go to the school.

I agree with lordofnarf. Do what you’re passionate, apply to schools that interest you (including safeties), and that’s that. Chance-me threads are generally annoying, and most of the answers about what SATs you should have and what’s actually important to an application is on MIT Admissions’ website. (You should trust them more than CC.)

I just ranted about the “SHOULD I APPLY??” question in another thread, so I’m not going to do it again here. Just apply.

I’m not sure if you realize, but MIT requires a math and science SAT subject test. So you’ll need to take a science one instead of that world history.

Thank you for replying. I will take biology as my second SAT. I had a question about it though. Why are there two kinds of bio test?

Sorry if the question is silly.

Here, [Let me google that for you](http://lmgtfy.com/?q=SAT+subject+test+biology)

hahah that was cool Star!

Thank you. I had a question–a general one. I love science and i want to be a scientist. Is MIT and Chicago on the same scale-to people’s view of two schools?

Chicago has a very rigorous science program,

Your SAT scores are holding you back the most, definitely try studying and retaking it in November or October.

Chicago’s heavy on science? I thought it was crazy about economics…I could be wrong. I don’t know that much about Chicago. I think you have a shot at MIT if you shape your application really well, have creative essays, improve your SAT scores enough so that you hit the 700 mark.

Just because Chicago is top 5 for economics does not make it “crazy about economics”. Chicago is also reputedly one of the best schools in the nation for math and physics, for example. The first nuclear fire was created by Enrico Fermi in the early 40s, the charge of the electron was calculated by Millikan’s famous oil drop experiment in the early 20th century, Fermilab is the best high-energy particle physics lab in the world (at least, until the Large Hadron Collider gets its act together), Nanbu discovered broken symmetry (and won the Nobel Prize last year for physics), etc. This is just physics. I could give you a million math results as well, but they’re rather unknown to the general populace.

http://www.uchicago.edu/about/accolades/nobel/

Also, Chicago has more physics Nobel prizes to its name than it does economics Nobels. A very impressive number of Fields medalists are also from the University of Chicago.

Obama taught governmnet and law in chicago for 12 years!! hahha just wanted to share

yeah and you know something even cooler? My friend’s dad is dean of the UChicago law school, and was Obama’s boss :P

Hey bluepurple,
I got an idea for you, Don’t send The SAT Reasoning Test to MIT.
Take TOEFL and send to MIT. You look some one who can score above 90.
MIT accepts either SAT I or TOEFL, they can accept both but they take the good one. All you need is two SAT subject test/one math and one science, and TOEFL, because english is not your first language.

Try subject math II also if you had precalculus experiance.
