Should I even bother applying to BC and NYU

I currently have Boston college and new york university listed as high reaches, but should I even bother applying? Do I have a reasonable chance?!?!

GPA unweighted: about 3.8-3.9
GPA Weighted: 4.1563
Class Rank: top 10 out of about 550 students

SAT (only taken once without really studying, plan on taking again):
1820 (CR: 600 M: 600 W: 620)

SAT II (might retake, if necessary):
Biology: 740 World History: 640 Math 2: 580
(probably won't submit math (and history if it seems too low) score unless I retake and do better, or if I have to)

ACT: have not taken*

AP Exams:
Biology: 5
Statistics: senior year
Chemistry: senior year
Calculus: senior year

High School: fairly decent suburban high school, many well-qualified students (usually a handful of students that get into top notch schools every year)

Classes: have taken honors at all possible opportunities, except one time in freshman year.*
So far: 15 honors classes, 1 AP class (full-year), 5 elective/required classes, 4 foreign language classes.*
Senior year (not final): 3 AP classes, 2 electives*

Grades: roughly 18 A and 6 A-.....as of the end of junior year, I have never got anything under an A-

Extracurricular Activities:
Recreational soccer (since sophomore year)
Youth group (since freshman year, but skipped junior year)
Hindi school (same as youth group)
Dartmouth Community Medical Lectures (since sophomore year)
Debate Team (sophomore year only)
Free Thinkers Club (junior year only)

Community Service/Volunteer:
Tutored other students through peer tutoring program at school
Idk if this counts but I volunteered during 2008 presidential campaign (held up signs, went door-to-door, stuff like that)
Not much else....this is one of my weak (if not the weakest) areas....Idk maybe I'll try volunteering at a hospital in the fall or key club or something just so I can add a little strength

Honors:
National Honor Society
1st place in Western New England College Competition
St. Anselm Book Award*
Best Model UN Delegate
High Honors Roll
Perfect attendance....?

Summer:*
Rec Soccer (Junior year)
Tennis Camp (sophomore year)

Also, I have some credits from a local community college

Ethnicity: Indian (of the South Asian variety, not Native American)

Location: NH

You have good chances since good grades even though SATs are low. Can you apply ED to one of them?

Oh I’m not so sure about doing ED, but maybe at bc

No you have no chance. What? Just do what you want to.

You won’t have a chance if you can’t raise your SAT score.

I would consider BU and north eastern

SAT scores aren’t everything. My friend is apart of the Stanford Class of 2014 and got a 1980 total on her SATs and was not a URM, legacy, or athletic recruit.

^Anecdotes like that never prove much of a point. Unless you can provide us with the entire application of your friend, it’s not fair to assert that her SAT score had no bearing on her chances of admission. I think it’s a reasonable assumption to make that your friend was probably accepted, despite the 1980, because some other portion of her application must have been extraordinary. This doesn’t disprove the importance of SAT scores; it just proves that they are just one factor in the big equation. One very important factor.

In the case of the OP, however, the other portions of his application do not compensate for the 1820. Now, BC and NYU aren’t Stanford, but there still exist baselines that the OP must pass if he wants to get accepted.

Crew: I think youre missing the point of this thread
Billabong: yeah, I’m gonna try to retake the sat twice, and I’ll probably study this time. But doesn’t nyu let you substitute sat’s with ap and subject test scores? Anyways, im assuming that you think i shouldnt bother applying if i dont improve my sat or get a good act score. How much would I have to improve my SAT to have a reasonable chance?
Galib: I’m already considering northeastern and bu. I have them listed as high matches. Do you think that would be accurate?
Crew: read what billabong said

Ok that’s good :)…I’m sort asian too (bangladesh) and also applying to nyu and boston college and univ. Despite your low scores…i would focus on essays as they fan be a huge deciding factor. Besides that good luck to you!

South* not sort lol

Thanks a lot!!!

I would say…almost no chance at all

i dont agree… i think u have a pretty good chance… especially if u do ed at bc, haha that rhymes

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/990498-i-wanna-go-college-yep-thatd-great.html

So should I atleast cut out nyu

Bumpity bump bump bump.

NYU’s admissions is all over the place and SAT/ACT scores are based on what school or major you are applying for. Visual and Performing artists are allowed lower SAT scores (1750-1900) while Stern students need higher scores (2050-2150). If you plan on applying to CAS or Steinhardt for NYU, I would be more comfortable saying you’re a match if your SAT was at a 1920, but, right now you’re a slight match. Also PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take the SATII for English! NYU has a new score choice option where 3 SATII’s in three different subjects will replace the SAT. This means you would need a history, english, and math/science. Your History and Bio scores are pretty good so all you would need is a good English score and you don’t really have to worry about the SAT. When you send NYU all your scores they will decide which is higher, your SATI or 3 SATII’s.

Wow, thanks for the really useful advice! I was thinking about taking the English subject test, but I heard it was fairly difficult. Is it basically the same thing as critical reading on the SAT I?

I’ll be taking Lit next month & from what I hear, it is just like a giant critical reading section.

As for your chances, both are reaches, though not unattainable. You really should retake the SATs/ACTs to aim for a 2000+/30+. Then, I’d say you have a decent chance at both. Your SATs are below the range for both schools & your ECs don’t really seem too focused or steady. Regardless, you have a very strong GPA & rank, which will surely help you.

Don’t eliminate BC & NYU just because you don’t think you have a chance! But seriously, retake the SATs & ACTs, because if you have a high GPA, you have great potential to do well on standardized tests, as shown by your AP Bio exam grade.

your GPA is really good, even though your SAT might bring you down a little bit. but you def. have a reasonable chance. my friend got into NYU with a way lower GPA than you and a 1900+ (not an athlete).

you should def. apply! good luck~:D
