Should I even bother applying to colleges? =/

I am, admittedly, not a good student--in CC terms, anyway (I'm considered above-average at my high school). I'm not planning on applying to any Ivy League school, but I still have doubts even for flagship state schools, even though my guidance counselor says otherwise.

My GPA and SAT scores are weak: 3.2 unweighted, 3.9 weighted, and a 1700 (I plan on retaking in November), and so are my ECs (this is partially due to family/transportation/DE issues). I volunteered at a middle school throughout ninth grade, a hospital last summer, and was in debate in 10th grade. I suppose I could say I entered an Ayn Rand writing contest too. I feel really ashamed of putting this on here lol :(

I've taken a fairly rigorous course load through high school with mostly honors and a few AP's (my school has 10). I've been dual-enrolling at a local community college since junior year, and I'm there full-time for senior year. I guess that's a plus?

I'm the first in my family to go to college, but we're also receiving a small income (Mom had to switch jobs so our income was cut in half). However, I think I'm eligible for a few in-state scholarships. My father is also a veteran, if that helps.

I just plan on applying to FSU, UCF and USF among others. I initially thought I would just continue my education at the community college and receive an AA, but I was told to go ahead and apply. I'm not completely sure of a major, but it will be somewhere along the social science league

But honestly, should I even bother? :/

YES of course. Having the option of going to college is better than attempting to find a job. If you would have to pay for college, then maybe I would suggest that instead you take out a loan, invest in yourself and maybe start a company or even just find a job.
What are you’re options if you don’t go to college? There aren’t many jobs available now and getting a free education at a state school sounds like a great idea. At worst, you decide it’s not worth it and drop out.

It’s not that I don’t want to go to college, I just don’t feel I’m eligible for it…

1700 and a 3.2 gpa just means that you wont be attending Harvard or MIT, doesn’t mean you can’t apply to other schools. If there are certain schools that would be feasible for you to attend, I’d give em a look. You might even like a couple of them and think it worthwhile to apply.

Since you’re in Florida, what Bright Futures level will you get?

Can you commute to a Florida public univ?

Apply to…
USF
UCF
FIU
New College

Find out from your dad if you’re eligible for any GI benefits that he can give you.

Can’t you retake the SAT? But still you can get into state schools or tier 4 universities at the least. Trust me you can get in!

Anyone who wants to go to college deserves that opportunity, regardless of grades. Even if you don’t get into your top choice school, you may find that your “safety” is actually a great fit for you. Or you can transfer to another college once you’ve gotten your grades up and improved on other aspects of your application. You can always continue at your CC as well and apply to other schools after another semester or two. It’ll at least save you some money.
