should i even bother applying?!?!

these are state schools so i feel like i might be kinda wasting my time since im not a resident
do you guys know if its worthwhile or if my shot is to slim

gpa-

total accelerated classes
8 honors classes
4 AP

top 15 percent of class ( very competive)

pretty good ec...good essays...good recs (hopefully)

Don't worry you should get into both no problem.

actually i think Wisconsin is fine. UNC is very difficult out of state, it's a big reach for you.

I live in Wisconsin, and we use to own a restaurant near campus and I would never want to go to UW Madison. I don't know why but I didn't like it at all, and the dorms are crappy.

UW Madision- Match
UNC- reach

Quake has no idea what he/she is talking about. UNC will be difficult.

That is a well warranted argument, Free.Blessings

Both are beautiful college campuses. Both are schools filled with spirit and academics. I prefer the OOS public schools than the privates. It's less on the price tag. UNC will be difficult OOS with your stats, you need to be well above the 75% mark with test scores, your GPA needs to be very strong, which it's just average for an OOS applicant. It's a reach, but if you like the campus, hey, why not? Application is expensive though, I think $70, and I think you missed a deadline. I think Wisconsin is achievable for you. There is a file on their website, a chart for test scores and GPA, and you can find the intersection and it will give you a percentage of acceptance.

A2wolves...can you please give me the link to the wisconsin thing if you know it if not its alright
and about unc...their average sat score is 1280 and i have 1380...isnt that well above average?!

A2Wolves is an idiot.

:( no one is telling me why unc is such a reach for me...i understand and accept the fact that it is but id like to know why so maybe i can do something about it
obviously i cant do anything about my gpa but i dont think a 3.8(uw) is that horrible as to LOWER my chances at a school...and the average sat score they say on the site is 1280...and i got 1380...i know its out of state...but my sat score is pretty significantly above average, no?

never mind i just figured it out...only 17 percent of people accepted are oos...that explains alot...atleast wisconsin has over 30 percent..some hope...darn why did i have to be from NJ

You are well qualified but UNC is pretty harsh when it comes to out of staters.

82% instate
18% oos

ughhhhh i had to be from the state with the horrid state school

do you go to uva?

Without reading your post, you should apply if you want to go there. (1X10^-10)% is infinitely greater than zero.

You should strive for UNC if you don't want to go to Madison (which I wouldn't want to).

madison is the one im talking about!

Yea you should def. apply, and yes i'm a uva student.

morgan17 - The Wisconsin admissions table is below.

http://www.admissions.wisc.edu/images/freshmanExpectations2006.pdf

For a student with a 3.8 UW, and a 1380, they have a 95% chance of admission. They do consider residency though, and residents are the bulk of the applicants. I'd say it's a good match around 80% for you.

As for UNC, the reason you need high stats is because they have quotas that the state passed so that they can only admit a certain # of OOS applicants each year. In english, the only out of staters they take are the ones that will be among the best in the class, well better than stats of the in-staters. You need a SAT of greater than 1400 to be considered a strong applicant there OOS. Their OOS application acceptance percentage is less than 15%, comparable to the Ivys. It's tough, but if you like the college, which I did, why not give it a shot?
