Basically I just copied and pasted this from the post I posted in the chances category only I just found out that SLO had its own sub category so I’m just going to post it to here too.

I know this will definitely be a reach. But should I even bother applying?

ACT: 26
SAT: 1540 (not going to submit it though)
Cumulative GPA: 3.8889
UC/CAL GPA: 3.67

I would have taken 6 total APs by the end of high school, and 6 total honors classes.

Highest math class I’ve taken is AP stats/calc.

Highest science would be physics.

I have about 80+ community service hours.

However I’m going to apply for the most impacted major which is mechanical engineering.

Gender: female
Race: asian

Don’t think those make a big difference, but just in case.

I do know some experiences told by some users on here, so I would love reading any other experiences regarding your acceptance, etc. It disappoints me how other people I know will probably get accepted for liberal arts, but I probably won’t since engineering is overpopulated. And would I have a better chance if I decided to choose another engineering major instead of ME?

I thing you must have calculated your GPA wrong unless you reported cumulative GPA is weighted. The Cal Poly GPA calculator will always give a higher result than an unweighted HS GPA.

Stats is not considered a math by Poly. Did you take Calc AB?

Industrial, Manufacturing and Materials are the easiest engineering admits.

The bottom line is that you need to retake the SAT. Get a blue book and do a timed test section every day. Then review ALL your answers, even the ones you got right. It’s the best way to prep for the SAT because it is as much or more about figuring out how they are trying to trick you as it is about knowledge.

Yes unfortunately the cumulative GPA I mentioned is my weighted. My cumulative unweighted is obviously lower, I think it’s around 3.56 maybe. Does it have to be SAT or can I just stick to ACT? Oh and yes I took AP calc BC last year as a junior and am taking AP stats this year because there’s nothing higher that I haven’t already taken.

ACT is fine. Do everything you can to get it well into the 30s.

As for your chances, ME will be a reach with your GPA, even if you get your ACT up. Certainly you should apply. I’d even suggest ED if you KNOW Poly is your first choice. It will be a long shot though. Poly does not do wholistic admission. It is strictly based on numbers and your rank amongst the ME applicants.

What ever you do, no matter what your top choice is, regardless of where else you apply, make sure you have a school that you’ll be happy with that you know you’ll get into.
