I know I can get good recommendation letters, and I can write good essay's, but is my gpa just too low to even try for emory? (especially it's really highly ranked business school) Also, would early decision help?

Your GPA is below Emory's average, ~3.7uw. However, this low GPA should not discourage you from applying because 1) you have the potential to raise your GPA next semester 2) from your sr course load, I assume you have taken difficult courses in high school 3) all applications are reviewed holistically 3) a 3.3 is not HORRIBLE; it's not like a 2.9 or 2.5 or something 4) your SAT score, at least for the verbal and math, is only somewhat below average (i was admitted with a 1350 Math+Verbal) 5) potentially you could score higher on the ACT or SAT retake 6) It's amazing what great rec's, EC's, and essays can do for one!

Two more things --
1) One can only apply to Emory College or Oxford college. You can not apply to the business school within Emory college as a senior in high school. Rather, sophomores at Emory interested in the business school apply for their Junior and Senior years as a Emory student in the business school. Therefore, intentions of majoring in business is irrelevant when it comes to undergraduate admissions.

2) Early Decision, statistically, would give you a slight advantage. Keyword: slight. Pretty much everyone on this forum will tell you that.

My advice -- show interest by visiting, write EXCELLENT essays, study for the ACT or SAT retake, do well next semester, get good recs, and put together an awesome application. By doing this, you may be able to compensate for a low GPA. In any case, it would improve your chances. In conclusion, I think you have an bumpy road ahead of you, but it's not hopeless.

You have a decent shot at ED. My SAT was about the same as yours, and my GPA a little higher. I also took a very challenging course load at my school. However, I also commited myself to EC's like band, football, model UN, and some other community service. Write good essays and show A LOT of interest in the school. Visit, order the DVD, call them up and ask questions.
