Should I Even Bother With Tulane?

Thanks ctymomteacher,
My S has no concerns with New Orleans or Tulane and is very understandable to their issues and confusion with multiple mailings. Tulane is one of his top choices and is anxious for their decision.
My reply to this thread was to let others know that, even with low PSAT score (my S had all threee scores below 60) one can ask to be on the mail and email list and ask for the "Personal App" and then possibly get it. The only qualification I should note is that my S did very well on his SAT (790M/690V/600W), and maybe Tulane used it in his case and not his requests for the "Personal App".

I wish him the best of luck!

My uncle who is a business professor at UT Austin told me that many good professors left Tulane to go to other private universities. I was wondering if that was true. I got accepted, but I'm not sure about it. I know it's a great school - one of my friends chose Tulane over Cornell - but I don't know about New Orleans.

Your uncle's information directly contradicts what Tulane has publicly announced, so I don't know what to tell you. As far as we know, they've lost only one or two full-time faculty. This probably isn't the best place to get the most accurate information (Tulane has its own regularly updated site with tons of info), but some of us follow things pretty closely, and that's what I've read.

Thanks, I appreciate your response.

Whizkid- go visit and make your decision based on knowledge. Tulane will have lots to offer maybe not the same as it did a year ago but different and possibly better things.
Regarding professors. After talking with the faculty spouse she felt if there is faculty turnover it will be the following year depending on how the repair of NO goes. Some spouses and families who are not as firmly entrenched in NO may encourage spouse to look elsewhere.

Hey do you think i got a shot at any merit aid with a 27 and a 3.6 unweighted with a good amount of aps/honors and lots of community service and extra ciriculars, i got one of the applications from a email should i apply?

LY my son received the DSA ($22k) with 1320 SAT, which I believe is higher than your ACT equivalent, and a 94uw which is an A. I believe your 3.6 is a B/B+. Still, I don't think you are out of the running. It is hard to know whether Tulane will do more or less with merit $ this year. Also, in my son's case, I believe other things - very strong recs, good essays, etc , and very possibly geography, were a factor. So you can't tell unless you try.

My son has the DSA also, and his unweighted GPA was about the same as yours, umich, but his ACT was a 33, and I think that might have had a lot to do with it. Still, speculating here isn't as useful as just trying. There's little to lose when there's no fee and no essay to write, right?

Would anyone mind telling me what the DSA is?

Also I have a 27 ACT and a 4.2 so how will that work with aid and stuff for me?? Are they only looking at test scores and GPA because I have an amazing community service record and work record along with high SAT II scores and AP scores. And info would be appreciated.

Honestly, you'll get the best information by going to Tulane's site. They tell you the regular minimum ACT/SAT scores for the Distinguished Scholars Award and what it provides on their website. At least they used to. I can't believe that information wouldn't still be there.

jmmom & stymomteacher,
When did Tulane inform you of the DSA? My son was just accepted and is finalizing his DHS application. Will he be notified of get his award, either, or any other, in Jan? Feb? Mar???

like mentioned before I have a 27 act score, a 3.6 unweighted with a good amount of ap's and honors. I also have around 200 community service hours and i played 2 varsity sports lacrosse and soccer. If i do get in would i have any chance at recieving a community service scholarship that they offer? Or any aid in general. What are my chances with aid or just getting in.

Plantree:

My D also received the DSA and I still have the letters. The acceptance came on 12/15 and the notification of the DSA was dated 12/27 and an invitation to the Honors Program came on 2/2/05. Hope this helps!! Good Luck!

My son's dates were similar to MarylandMom's. Fingers crossed for you, plantree. His acceptance came 12/13 and I remember that the DSA came after Christmas Day. It was a total and totally pleasant surprise!
