Should I even bother?

Hi, everybody.

I just finished sophomore year, and I think it's time to step back and take a hard look at my future. For the two years combined I've had an unweighted GPA of 3.57 and a weighted GPA of 4.30. If I get all A's next year, I will have a 3.71 and 4.5 weighted. Would I have chance if I work extra hard next year? I really want to apply to UPenn ED.

Stats:
Took the SAT and ACT in the 8th grade: Got a 2200 and a 32, respectively. Will take the SAT in the future

SAT 2 scores: Math 2-800(8th grade)
Math 1-770(7th grade)

Can I do anything about my lackluster GPA? Will my EC's compensate? Or am I doomed to rejection from my dream school?

Well 87% of students admitted to UPenn had a GPA of 3.75 or higher. So you really need to step up your game next year, and shoot for all A’s. Your SAT scores are fantastic. Looking at your extra-curricular activities it seems alot of them have to do with math. Have you considered joining the school newspaper or entering a writing contest? It will make your application more well rounded. Have you also considered tutoring math, it could really help your application as well.

Yes!!! Excuse me, you skipped two years of math, won several science Olympiad awards, got an a in multivariable calculus, AND are going to take more college math. Get straight A’s throughout the rest of high school, compete in more national competitions, and you’ll have a fair shot at MIT, for god’s sake. Take the SAT until you get the 2400 you know you can get and don’t worry. Your GPA stinks, but your transcript will impress any college. I’d say go for it!

Thanks! Would it help if I majored in French?

Maybe, but seriously…French? You’re clearly a math person. Anyways I don’t see how you scored a 2200 in 8th grade yet failed to get a good gpa. Anyways, I don’t know why you bothered to make a new account but that gpa is really low and, though Penn has a good ED acceptance rate, I don’t see how your ECs make up for it.

I see. Well, I still have junior year. Are there anything at all I can do to correct the situation, or am I well and truly effed?

Listen up. YOU MOST DEFINITELY HAVE A CHANCE. And a pretty good one at that! I’m the same age as you and people like you that have those SAT scores scare me. You need to KILL your junior and senior years, especially junior year–that’s make it or break it. Get all A’s, take AP and Honors. Keep up the amazing EC’s and remember to continue developing what makes you “stand out” and rack on leadership positions! I think if you keep this up and work harder, you will be a very good candidate for UPenn and have very good chances. I’m telling you, KILL junior year. Don’t stop your muder-spree fiasco until summer break begins. Do this and you’ll make it!

Chance me back?
