should I even bother?

Hiya,

I'm sort of bummed because apparently a lot of people from my school want to go to upenn (which just absolutely kills my already low chances of getting in), but I'm trying to be hopeful about it. So I wanted to know if you guys think I still have a chance. What do you think?

CAS - EARLY DECISION

SAT I: 670 Reading, 720 Math, 660 Writing (total:2050)
bad I know. I just took to ACT and I'm praying that it'll be better
SAT II: 740 USH and taking the others (Bio and Math) in May
4.2ish GPA (I have a feeling it's going down to like a 4.1 because of junior year)
APs: US (5), Spanish (currently taking), Government (currently taking), IB Biology
all my other classes are honors

ECs: - Varsity Crew (spring 2008, summer 2008, spring 2009)
- Amnesty International - secretary
- Church missions trip to Peru (summer 2007)
- Church missions trip to North Philadelphia (summer 2008)
- Interact
- Summer internship as a paralegal at a law office
- Veterinary 4-H program
- Asian Cultural Society - secretary
- Connections - treasurer
- Math magazine - Asst. Editor-in-Chief
- Student Council - Delegate

Honors:
- National Honors Society
- Mu Alpha Theta - Asst. Treasurer
- Science Honors Society
- Foreign Language Honors Society
- Social Studies Honors Society

Essays: well considering I'm a junior, I haven't written them yet, but I'm planning on spending a buttload of time on it in order to beast them

Hooks: well I'm a coxswain for my crew team?

Thanks!

and yea, I know most of you aren’t really concerned about this cause decisions already came back, but could you help me out? like what would you do if you were me, now that you know the outcomes of your applications?

I noticed you’re secretary of Aisan Cultural Society. If you’re not Asian, this is a plus. If you are Asian, well then that never helps…

But hey, we’ve got a 17% acceptance rate now, so if you’ve got a chance at any Ivy, it would have to be Penn! ;)

I think your hooks like crew and stuff could really help. And of course ED helps too.

My sats for RD was close to your score so I think you do stand a chance, plus you have more EC than I do.

work on getting those sat scores up

are you good enough to be recruited?

you should probably retake the SATs, especially if you’re asian or white. if you’re not asian or white, your chances go up up up.

yes, I’m asian so ethnicity will unfortunately not help me; But I do plan on just not listing my ethnicity when they ask haha. I don’t even know if that makes a difference or not. Damn, I wish I were Native American…

Anyway, I’m hoping crew would help me out, but I’m not sure if coxswains get recruited since there’s no quantitative data to compare athletes with. I’m basically the boss-lady that controls the boat and yells at the rowers.

Extracurricular wise, I’m ok?

Thanks! =]

i heard if you dont list an ethnicity then they just look at your app as if you are an orm or white.

Sat scores kind of (definitely) low for Asian. I’ve never been a fan of not putting down ethnicity, but that’s just me. What do you mean your gpa will go down? What’s your uw? Not really a lot of aps, but then again I didn’t have that many either. Good ecs, I’d play up the crew thing if I were you. Definitely give Penn a shot.

You should email the crewing coach at Penn just in case you could get recruited as a coxswain.

Coxswains do get recruited, at least from nationally ranked boats.

my uw gpa is like a 3.9something
and yeah, my SAT scores absolutely suck for an asian, but then again I’m not one of those kids that have been going to sat classes since they were like in ten…
as for the rowing thing, I think I’m going to do their rowing camp over the summer =]

Oh yeah, I forgot some other ECs. But they’re just those generic stuff: National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta (asst. treasurer), Science Honors Society, SS Honors Society, Foreign Language Honors Society
