I've taken the ACT twice my junior year, scoring a 28 and a 27. I'm a senior now and should I even consider taking another test? I want to either get admission into U of M Ann Arbor or an accelerated medical program. My EC's are pretty good from what I've been told, which includes a ton of medical volunteering, doing actual research at U of M, and quite a few leadership roles. My GPA's also high, considering I've received only 2 A-'s throughout high school. Some of these accelerated medical programs want a higher ACT score, somewhere in the range of 30-35. What should I do? I feel as if I've hit the ceiling with my ACT score, considering I have taken it a few times before junior year. Any helpful advice?

Accelerated med programs? Do you mean a BS/MD program? Know then that these are among the MOST competitive programs in the country. Your 28/27 means you’re not even viable whatsoever. If med school is in your future, you’ll have to go the conventional route (nothing wrong with that). But the competition for BS/MD programs is crazy and your scores don’t make you likely at all.

Are you in-state for MI? Even with your solid GPA your ACT does not mean you’re a solid admit to UMich by any means. If you’re not in MI, then your chances at UM are very bad.

I think that you should put an accelerated program on the backburner… and I think that you can certainly try for UMich but I think that you should also have 3-4 colleges where an ACT score of 28 is in the 50th percentile or higher for that school. Here is a benefit - if you already know you want to go to med school, which is expensive, then try and go to a smaller school with a higher acceptance rate where you can continue to do internships and earn straight As, which will then allow you time to study for the MCATs which do count for med school acceptance – this type of college might even give you merit award based on your grades and achievements – something you probably would not get at UMich.
