Should I even minor?

Im a sophomore at UTSA studying computer science. I started college with 15 AP credit hours. I’ve done the calculations, and if I continue my current course of studying, I’ll have 117 hours by the end of my senior year if I JUST continue my CS curriculum (I need 120 hours to graduate). This is including the 42 hours of core work UTSA requires and the 81 hours needed for a CS degree (some of these classes overlap which is how I end up with 117).

The minimum amount of hours I’d have to take for any minor is 12 more for math (which I rather not minor in anyways). Any minor I’d want to do would easily put me at 130+ hours. What do you guys think? Is it a waste of $$$ to get a minor for me? I mean I’d like to minor but I’m looking at this from an economic standpoint. Will no employer ever hire me because I no haz minor and I will be homeless? Haha but seriously, any input is appreciated.

In case anyone is wondering, I took a basic chemistry class, algebra, pre-cal, and an international politics class that all added towards my hours (the maths were pre-reqs for CS).

@JolliestRaven Well I’ve never seen any job posting that asked for what minor you are. From what I’ve seen all employers want to know what you’re bachelors is in. From the way I see it a minor helps you pick up skills that could potentially be useful if you go further in academia.

You could tell an employer you minored in math (or whatever) at a job interview, but unless the skills you picked up are relevant to the position why is it something you would even bring up?

If I were you I would save my money and use those last couple units for an internship as course credit. Or heck use it for taking a random CS class you find interesting.

I’d say minoring is more for interests. Say you’re interested in one thing but are majoring in another thing. You make take a minor to fulfill that interest. Also they are used to better understand things and be a bit more qualified say you are a finance major but want to learn more statistics to help you in a future job, you’d take a statistics minor. If you have no desire to fill any interests and don’t want to further education or spend money I’d say don’t take it.

You don’t need a minor. Don’t worry about that - just finish your CS degree
