Should I even transfer to Rice??...

I applied and got rejected..sad etc.

My major right now is political science and business administration.

I had a 3.56 or .65 in the fall term (doing a lot better this term), but i did drop one class (not sure if that will play a big part in my application to rice or not)

I really like rice for the people and the classes and the beautiful campus, but someone told me that rice is an undergrad college..and I have no clue what it means.

I am trying to finish all my core classes, and i guess i go on to grad studies (second two years of college) and i guess grad school.

What do you guys think?? Do you guys know any other better school, or what do you guys suggest that I do?

It has a STRONG undergrad and mediocre grad school from what I understand.

I'd say apply to MIT, harvard, Princeton, Stanford, etc for grad school because Rice, though not terrible, is not the best.

oh my gosh!! MIT, harvard, princeton, stanford!??!? those school are hard to get on, i am not sure about transfering but wow!

thanks so much!

fyi, i am at a community college right now, dont know how mit, or harvard or rice or whatever sees it.

To prepare for graduate school, you might want to consider transferring to a reputable school, though it need not be Rice.

NSPEDS!! i remember you!! how are you?

hmm, i really really want to go to rice becuase i like the and not too many ppl are cocky and i really need to stay in houston. so, all i got really is rice. business and political science wont be so bad there, at least with rice's name, i can go to a decent grad school. ..right?

Sure, but once again, you cannot afford to apply to just one school. There are many others that, while not as socially friendly as Rice, still offer the same if not better advantages when it comes to graduate studies. Additionally, you will need to be flexible about the location; if you intend to attend top graduate schools, you must have regional flexibility. It is better to start transitioning now than later.

Also, Rice is not the only school with students who are not too cocky. Brown University and the University of Chicago offer similar social environments, though UChi is obviously more rigorous. Surprisingly, according a friend, Princeton has an identical studentry. Though Princeton does not accept transfers, the purpose of this post is to show that a little research goes a long way in choosing which school is the best fit.

hmm, yeah, i should research some more, but i have never been happy at any school and i've been to rice a few times...it made me happy.

so i guess that's why i have my eye on rice so much, but i also cant wait time.

i can affored to leave houston, money and family wise, but i guess i'll save up some money and give it to my family before i leave or something. i am the sole provider for my family, as crazy as that sounds.

brown sounds nice. what's a good law college? i know rice has some law classes and they have that "jessie jones business school" building...or was that another school. i dont know.

Pincows law is for grad school. There is no law college. The best way to go to law school is to go to the best undergard school and get a good GPA. Pick up a USNEWS, its pretty accurate for undergrad rankings.

slipper, accurate according to what? you must have compared it to something to find out it's accurate.. just wondering what it was

I mean in terms of placement (compared to my experience + Wall Street Journal), reputation, etc. USNEWS is the best indicator I have seenby far.

i see, well, i cant leave houston so i guess i will try and apply to rice. hopefully i get accepted this time but i am just getting my basics out of the way before i can transfer. hmm...

does anyone know if where you are transferring from makes a big difference? (prestige of school-wise)

no, most rice transfers come from either around houston or ut. ive met a few transfers from schools i never knew existed, such as university of houston and texas southern. admissions everywhere know that most transfers are coming from lower schools, understandably. i would say it makes no difference at all.

there was a stanford article in which the dean of admissions said she was excited that a lot of california area community college students were applying to stanford, and yes they do admit them.

even if it is a community college?

also, i am thinking about taking the SATs again..should i?? the first time i took, i did average..national average. i am not a good test taker at all, heck, i freak out with my math tests at school!

and since it is a community college, it doesnt have much to offer...no activites etc.

what semester are you wanting to apply for? i'm apply to transfer for fall 06 and took sats for the first time this past january...accidently skipped a whole page of questions in teh reading section....not the best thing ever.... but i've read a whole lot about transfer stats and the range is usually 1300-1440 for transfer sats....i don't think they matter too much, but it wouldn't hurt. the grades you make at the college level play a much more important role. the general announcemnts/coure catalog for 2006 discussed transfer admissions and said the process was "similar to that of freshman but with a much greater emphasis placed on performance at teh college level"...retaking wouldn't hurt but its probably not the end of the world if you don't....pay closer attention to grades

hmm, i probably transfer in fall 07. hey, its community college, it is not that hard to get a 4.0 but the thing i am worried about is my SATs and my extracurricular activities. community college doesnt really have one....i have a good resume, but i dont think it means much. =/

i am stuck lol

ec's aren't everything...just show them you want it, and stay positive! what's meant to be will happen

It is unfortunate that what I was told by an admissions officer at Rice contradicts this.

If the applicant is from a more reputable institution, he/she will have the upperhand.

thanks nspeds. part of the point was that there aren't many coming from those schools, which makes it not so important.
