I got accepted into Southern New Hampshire University. They gave me a $7,000 academic scholarship and $10,900 need-based financial aid. The rest (slightly over 20k) were loans. Being an out of state student, the cost of everything was just under $40,000. So there is no way that I can afford to go there.

I have yet to here from my top choice, Keene State. They are about $23,000 a year. Am I likely to get the same type of need-based financial aid? Or will I get way less because it is so much cheaper? Assuming I get accepted.

You will have to wait to see what Keene State offers you. The school does not meet full need for accepted students so there is really no way to predict their award. If I were guessing, I would guess that your award from Keene will be less…but that’s a guess. You didn’t provide enough information to make an informed guess…what was your FAFSA EFC? That amount WILL be expected to be paid by you at Keene (and anywhere else). You will at least get $5500 in Stafford loans. Beyond that…it will be up to Keene to make an award to you.

I don’t know where to find the EFC…But to sum up my situation…

I live with my mother, her income is around 35k. My brother is going to be a junior in college next year. If that helps any haha…

Hopefully I get decent financial aid…My brother is going to Regis College for like $4,000 a year. And I don’t want to have to go to effin’ community college next year…

Why did you apply to OOS publics if you needed good FA? What is your home state?

My home state is Maine. I did apply to UMaine Orono (haven’t heard back yet). But that really isn’t where I want to go. There weren’t many schools in Maine that suited me. Of course, if I had to choose between UMaine and community college, I would choose UMaine.

UMaine for in state students is only a little cheaper than Keene out of state students. I don’t know…we shall see.

It’s really up for grabs as to what Keene or any other college will offer you in the way of a merit or financial aid package. It is not a school that guarantees to meet need.
