Should I explain my dip of grades in junior year?

I completely screwed around in junior year and wasn't really serious about my studies and that is reflected on my grades, not to mention that the rush of APs I took overwhelmed me a little. That said, I have had an excellent senior year because I finally realize the seriousness of doing well in HS for college.

Usually in college apps theres a place you can explain any low grades- my question is: Would it be benificial for me to explain my dip in grades?

Thanks!

Without a legitimate reason, I don’t think you should try to explain. It appears you’ve proven that you can bounce back, so no use restating that. If you have a reason with a bit more substance, you could mention it to your GC and have them explain it. However, I think it also depends on the severity of the “dip” and how noticeable it is.

I had around 2-3 Cs in both semesters of junior year. 1st semester senior year I have all As and a couple of B+s. Is that a big jump?

I also thought that explaining grades is more if you experience a family death or divorce, but I’m getting conflicting reports elswehere that I should explain myself…

Did you get the C’s in AP courses?

Yes. AP Calc and AP physics. C+ in AP Physics, C in Calc, and a C+ once in history.

What exactly is there to explain?

By “explain” most people have in mind bringing attention to extenuating circumstances, such as illness or divorce, that would cause grades not to be an accurate reflection of the student. It seems your grades were an accurate reflection of who you were at the time…
