Should I file fafsa if I already know that my daughter won't qualify for financial aid? We aren't wealthy, but own our home, have no debt, and have been putting away for retirement and college for some time. She's a good candidate for merit scholarships, but I know nothing else will be forthcoming. Does everyone file a fafsa?

Marsie, not exactly the same situation here, but I do know D will not qualify for aid. We will file anyway as a sort of insurance against any future financial issues. The school she is likely to attend would look to see that she filed by the deadline if something happened and she was eligible for financial aid in the short term future. I also believe that one is only eligible for unsubsidized government loans if one files.

If you know that scholarships are possible, I would suggest filing, as many scholarships ask you for FAFSA reports. And, rrah's suggestion to file "just in case" is good. You never know...

That's what I figured.
