I'm currently a freshman at Miami (OH) and am definitely going to transfer out for the fall 2006. I've narrowed it down to Columbia, UPenn, and Georgetown, and NYU. Are my chances good of getting accepted into atleast one or should I find another school where I have a better chance. If I should, what would you recommend? Thanks!

High School Stats:

GPA: 4.556 (2 out of 176)
ACT: 32
SAT: 1340 (I'm not sending this unless absolutely necessary)

College Stats:

GPA: 4.0
First Semester: World History to 1500, Moral and Social Philosophy, Honors English, Honors Psychology, Astronomy
Second Semester: Western Civilization, American Political System, Theatre, Geology

I think since you're already a student at some university, you should only apply to colleges you feel you are most interested in. I mean, do you really need a safety school so much that you want to get out of Florida by all means possible?

Get out of Florida? Huh? To the OP, you should be able to get into NYU at least. The other schools are hard to say.... so you should find a safety just in case. Villanova or Boston U are good safeties for you.

Yeah, it is competetive, but you have great stats at Miami-OH... You have a much better chance at getting into BU than you do at BC or the other schools listed in the OP. Well, NYU and BU are about the same. Your chances at the schools are listed in order from least probable to most probable:

I personally think you will have a very tough time at Columbia, a shot (25%) at Penn, a better shot at G-town (probably 50/50), and an excellent shot at NYU (75-80%). If you want Ivy, Brown or Cornell are your best bets. I would absolutely apply to Brown if I were you, its a great place to transfer into.

If I were you I would add UNC-CH. You will get in (its much easier to transfer in than being a first year). Its a great school that is a safety. UNC is beautiful like Miami, but with much cooler, more liberal, and smarter students than Miami. Also the academics are far superior. Its a great safety.

BU and NYU aren't the same, NYU is more difficult. BU isn't much better of a school than Miami. Not worth it in my opinion.

Boston University: (transfer acceptance rate 35%)
Average high school GPA: 3.54
Test Scores:
SAT verbal scores over 500 100%
SAT math scores over 500 100%

ACT scores over 24 95%
SAT verbal scores over 700 21%
SAT math scores over 700 26%
ACT scores over 30 34%

NYU: (transfer acceptance rate 33%)
Average high school GPA: 3.60
Test Scores:
SAT verbal scores over 500 99%
SAT math scores over 500 99%
ACT scores over 18 100%

ACT scores over 24 100%
SAT verbal scores over 700 32%
SAT math scores over 700 30%
ACT scores over 30 56%

They're pretty close to the same. IMO, and by the numbers.

Miami (OH):

Average high school GPA: 3.7
Test Scores:
SAT verbal scores over 500 94%
SAT math scores over 500 96%
ACT scores over 18 100%
SAT verbal scores over 600 54%
SAT math scores over 600 66%
ACT scores over 24 86%
SAT verbal scores over 700 10%
SAT math scores over 700 13%
ACT scores over 30 18%

NYU, BU, and Miami aren't too different if you compare the percentages of what type of students go there.

UNC-CH transfer acceptance rate is about equal with Villanova...so it's a safety for you, SMan.

Thanks for the help! I'll definitely look more into UNC, but it seems like a great idea.

Slipper, thanks for the percentages...even though they depress me a little (Here's hoping to NYU)...but what're my chances at Brown and Cornell? I don't think I could apply to 7-8 schools and I'm trying to narrow down the list but I'm having a really tough time.

As far as the students enrolled, and their test scores, UNC is not a whole lot better than "those listed above"

UNC:

Test Scores:
SAT verbal scores over 500 96%
SAT math scores over 500 98%
ACT scores over 18 98%
SAT verbal scores over 600 73%
SAT math scores over 600 78%
ACT scores over 24 84%
SAT verbal scores over 700 23%
SAT math scores over 700 27%
ACT scores over 30 31%

I'd say it's actually between BU and Miami(OH), but below NYU, strictly by the freshman students ACT/SAT score percentages.

Hey! I'd say they are about 40% at Brown and Cornell. For some reason these Ivies are much more transfer-friendly in terms of stats. Both have annual transfer accept rates of about 25%, which is much higher than their Ivy counterparts. From what I've seen on this board, this does seem to translate into an easier chance of admission. Good luck!

I'm just having an impossible time narrowing down schools. I haven't started essays yet and the deadlines are all pretty much a month away. I just don't know what to do.

Right Now, I'm thinking:

Definitely Apply:
Columbia
NYU
UPenn

Apply?:
Georgetown
Brown/Cornell
BU

what should I cross off the list because I have A) No chance or B) Wouldn't fit me?

I'm looking for an urban campus in a great area. My major is History pre-law and I plan to enter law school later. I'm not a huge drinker and want a city/close to a city atmosphere with a diverse campus with many opportunities.

Also, what're the chances I'll get into AT LEAST one of those schools?

If you want a definite safety, I'd say apply Boston University. I wouldn't say you have 0 chance for any of these schools because you have a stellar college GPA and decent SAT score, but Columbia should be really tough.

I think its worth it, choices are everything and you never know how things play out. I think NYU is almost a safety so I don't think you need BU.
