Should I get a counselor - Transfer Student

Hi,

I am thinking about transferring from my school in the spring of 2017. I am trying to decide if I should spend a bit of money on a college counselor. I’m finding it harder to find admissions stats for transfer students than it was for incoming freshmen so I don’t really know my chances in the same way that I did the first time around. I was also thinking about using the counselor to choose schools to apply too and read some of my application question answers (transfer common app isn’t really an essay but each school has questions and you choose one or two to answer). I don’t think I did a very good job planning the first time around and I didn’t have enough matches and didn’t look at enough schools, etc. etc. I would have to pay for it out of pocket and I don’t know how much it will cost yet or if it will be worth it. I’m going to talk to them on Friday about it… I’m guessing a few hundred at least. When I go back to my current school in the fall I will talk with some people there to figure out if this is what I want to do etc so that isn’t what I need this specific counselor for, this is to help me do things right this time and make the best choice for me since it didn’t work out the first time.

Also if you have any advice about transferring or recommendations for schools. I have a 3.9 GPA in college SAT was an 1860 I think and my high school GPA was a 3.19 come graduation. I live in MA and want to transfer to a school in MA or NY, potentially CA is an option as well but because I can’t go look at the schools easily I’m not sure I want to “waste” time with CA.

Thank you! Anything you can tell me or say would be helpful.

A 3.9 makes you a viable applicant everywhere. Don’t worry about that. Your problem might be affordability, so if you need aid, be sure to discuss that with the transfer admissions offices early on in the process.
