I am a senior in high school, and I really need a laptop, I have a Dell from 2007 and it isn't even usable anymore so I've been using my mothers HP. I will never get Dell again, but I was looking at the VAIO C Series. Are they good laptops? Are the VAIO S series better? I cannot afford a macbook air, but I can if I wait until the summer to get it. I am not into gaming or anything. I just need a laptop for basic college work. I just want a laptop that will last a long time and has a long battery life. I know some colleges suggest we get their brand as well, so that will be a con to getting one for Christmas. What do you think? Should I get a laptop for Christmas or wait until I start college?

I’m in the same situation, I got one for Black Friday.

Same situation here too. At first I was leaning towards waiting, but now I don’t know. I’m interested to see what others have to say…subscribed!

APPLE MACs RULE!!!

I’m a senior in high school too, so I can’t speak to the college experience, but my reasoning for getting my laptop (I got it in August) is so that I would be more familiar with it. I take some time adjusting to computer keyboards and such, and I don’t really want to be messing around with the controls and trying to figure things out when I’m also trying to adjust to a new college.

That’s just how am I though, so hopefully you get some insight from some college folk!

I’ve been admitted to Ursinus College and they give free laptops to incoming freshman, but it’s not a top choice. It would be terrible if I buy a laptop now and then later I attend Ursinus. I would get another one for free!

I would wait until the summer to get the air. It will be worth the wait and money, and it will have the battery life and durability you want. Plus, it’s so awesomely thin and sweet and just over two pounds! You won’t want to be lugging around a fat, heavy PC around campus ;)

If you like the Air, then you’ll love the Samsung Series 9 notebook :).

If you have $700 extra you want to throw away, buy a Mac over a comparable PC that costs $300.

Sony laptops are a very good option if you are going a PC route… although I would wait to buy a mac hahaha… I used to be a PC person, am a junior in college now and switched to a macbook this fall after my HP died on me…life has been a lot easier. No viruses, longest battery life ever, so reliable, doesn’t overheat, split screen capabilities, never freezes/shuts down…I could go on and on.

^ so once more:
APPLE MACs RULE!!!

Unless you need a laptop now, wait until summer. Better computers will come out in the mean time. Prices on similar computers will come down.

I was in the same situation. So after a few months of consulting and researching,I told my dad to get me MacBook pro 15"… on black Friday. Since I’m abroad currently, and he will come with the laptop in January.

It’s better to get it now, rather than later. You need to configure it,learn how to use it…

Now the Sony Vaio is a good laptop, but is more business like.

It shouldn’t take several months to adjust to a laptop. A few weeks over the summer should be more than enough. If I were you I would wait. Apparently you still have access to a laptop (your mom’s HP) in the chance that you might need one between now and the summer. Intel’s Ivy Bridge series is set to release in 2012, and laptops with those CPUs should get significantly better battery life (all else being equal) due to new technology and a 22 nm manufacturing process vs 32 nm.

I think I’m just going to get a laptop for Christmas.

Everyone here has suggested you wait to see what college you attend. Most colleges have special rates from Apple and other companies for laptops, and if you end up at a school that supplies a laptop you will be sorry you wasted $ you say your family does not have to spare. If money is tight, WAIT and do NOT get a laptop for Christmas. You can ask for the cash instead and decide later.

Not everyone told me to wait, 3 posters told me to get one for Christmas. But I do see your point. And if I don’t get one for Christmas, I’ll have no gifts because the laptop is my gift. I also won’t have enough money to buy a Macbook because my birthday money is going to ThesCon. But maybe my graduation money from my grandparents then I could… Idk.

Where do you see 3 people saying to get it now? I see only Boxer. The others either address the type of computer to consider, talked about their own personal plan or say to wait. If the laptop is your gift, ask your parents how much they plan to spend and ask for it in a check.

In addition to student deals in the summer on Apple products, they usually have something where you can get a free ipod or itouch with your computer purchase.

Tizzy got one for black Friday and rchhay got one in August. The only con to wait is that I have no laptop now. My Dell laptop broke, so I have been using my moms for the last couple months.
