To repeat, they discussed their personal plan ( e.g. a good deal on Black Friday). That is not the same as saying get one for Christmas. In fact, there will probably be better after christmas sales. You are able to use your moms. If cost is a significant issue, as you suggest, then wait.

Cost was only an issue if I was getting a Macbook Air, I was going to get a Sony VAIO if I didn’t wait. I just wouldn’t have enough money for the Macbook (only if I waited), but I would if I got the VAIO which costs $680 without tax. I’ve heard mix things about the Macbook. I know someone who got one after switching from a PC and they said it was very confusing. I’ve also heard great things though. I’m not tech savy, I just need it for homework/facebook and what not.

I’m guessing College Confidential is the what not. ;)

Haha. I am hoping I won’t need College Confidential once I enter in college.

Sounds like you’ve already made up your mind about a laptop for christmas. There are many MANY reasons to wait, as early as for the after christmas sales, or for the college discounts available to enrolled students, not to mention that you may get one for free. Even if ou only save $100 off the cost of the current sales, $100 is a LOT of money to many people. That could pay for one night in a motel for your college trip, or a few tanks of gas. Really, if you can manage to survive a little longer on your mom’s computer, the smart thing to do is research the computers, find out what specs you want/need and watch for the sales to be really good. You dont HAVE to have it on Christmas day.

I do expect we will continue to see threads started by you on cc after you begin college.

I haven’t made up my mind yet, but my mother does want to get me one for Christmas because she is tired of me using hers. So, it may not just be my decision. But I do understand what you’re saying and I would be getting a better laptop if I wait.

The only thing I can see me posting on CC after I start college is transferring threads and lets pray that’s doesn’t happen!

You won’t necessarily be getting a better computer-- you’l be getting a better deal on a computer if you wait. For what you plan to use it for, you can do fine with a very basic computer that will be very inexpensive after Christmas.

Okay, thanks!

I completely agree with aldfig0. Like…2 weeks is plenty, unless you have some crazy stuff on your previous laptop, which it doesn’t sound like is the case for you.
I got a new laptop last November (Fall 2011 = my first semester) and that was a bad choice because I had to send it to HP for repairs in September. But now I have a MacBook Pro and it rocks.

Buying a new laptop right now is stupid.

Reasons:

1) ivy bridge should be coming out before you get into college, which means better battery life, better performance, etc.
2) due to aforementioned reason, any current laptop would be cheaper.
3) Thailand. hard drive prices are now more expensive, which means more expensive computers.

Anything that would be reasonably cheap at this point is probably not worth buying because it will be very shoddy.

Hmm, from what I’ve seen the floods in Thailand haven’t been reflected in the prices of actual laptops.

But the first two points are definitely correct

the 13" macbook pro gets more battery life than a 13" macbook air would (I think). Either way the MBA still gets “enough” I think, but yea…

Get it when you’re ready to get it. You could even wait until after college starts, or buy a desktop!

you should get it for christmas, so you can be fully accustomed to it before college starts

My parents just ended up getting me a SONY for Xmas. It wasn’t my decision. I told them to wait, but they said I’m getting one now or never…

Get your laptop as late as possible. That way, you’ll have the latest technology at your fingertips. The whole “getting used to your computer” idea is ludicrous unless you’re a grandmother.

You can never buy a new computer. Details about the coming generation will always be known, and you have to wait for it. Just stick with what you have, and you’ll never waste money on some about to be made obsolete. This TRS-80 will run forever. ;)

Good decision on your parents part. If you’re not into gaming or video editing and all of that jazz, the “latest technology” doesn’t matter much if we’re talking a span of 6 months. Plus, if the most you’ll be doing is using the internet, Microsoft Office Suite, and simple things of that nature, a Mac would be a bit unnecessary. I got a $600 Toshiba Satellite in June after my Dell was stolen (i will never buy another Dell anyway) and I love it. I got the max warranty to cover software updates, broken hardware, viruses, etc. and it was still a few hundred dollars cheaper than a Mac.

Yep, I’ll be getting my SONY tomorrow. BTW, I HATE Dell too. I will never get another one either. My other family members have HP and it is much better IMO. I hope SONY is good, I don’t know anyone who has a SONY laptop or computer. My moms laptop doesn’t even work now, so I couldn’t have used it if I didn’t get one for xmas. And my dad is always on his work computer.

I held out on getting a laptop until college. In fact, I go to Wake so I got a laptop for free as a freshman. I now use the Lenovo they have me for everything. It wasn’t that hard to wait.

I would have zero laptop or computer if I didn’t wait, lol.
