Hello, I'm entering UCSD Sixth College in the fall of 2012. I was thinking about getting either a longboard or bike since I want a form of transportation to get around transportation that would be faster than walking. Technically, I've never ridden a longboard before, but I can skateboard pretty well, but if anyone suggests that longboarding and skateboarding are nothing alike, then I will lean more toward getting a bike. However, if people suggest that the campus is that small, then I won't even bother with either, but I kind of doubt it's that small.

Also I've noticed no one seems to wear helmets in college. Isn't that kinda risky or are you not supposed to go very fast on college campuses?

And if I do get a longboard, am I allowed to bring it into classrooms? Because I'm pretty sure I can't lock it up.

I think the campus is very accessible without a longboard or bike. You can get to anywhere on campus within 20 minutes by foot, and if you’re feeling lazy you can just take a shuttle. I don’t use either and I’m completely content.

Longboarders and cyclists here tend not to wear helmets for whatever reason, most likely because it’s ugly and they don’t think it a risk when they ride a longboard/bike. I’ve already been in too many close calls (damn longboarders and cyclists refuse to stop at stop signs, and pedal down narrow walkways all too often -__-) and it’s pretty annoying. Some people don’t know how to ride down hills and there are a lot of bloody accidents.

If you do end up getting a longboard or bike, be cautious! And don’t be an annoyance to the pedestrian community, haha. You can bring them in class, usually people just set it by their feet, and for smaller classrooms, I see people put it in the corner of the room.

A lot of the people I know who rides longboard, bikes, and the likes have crashed at least once. It wasn’t anything major, but just be careful. When it gets crowded, try not to go as fast.
