should i get a roommate??

the title says it all... i'm so conflicted! :S
i'd love any and all opinions on the topic. thanks!

Do you mean: “Should I find a roommate in advance and ask McGill to place us together?” or “Should I request a double room?”

If you mean the first, then be aware that McGill will only place you together if you end up in the same residence after the lottery is conducted.

If you mean the second, then be aware that whether or not you get a double room depends almost entirely on which residence you end up in. For example, New and C4 are almost entirely doubles, but Gardiner/Molson etc. are almost entirely singles.

I think that this is such a personal question that the answer depends entirely on you. How much privacy do you need? How much social stimulus do you need? Does noise bother you? Does having a roommate that invites friends into the room at midnight bother you? Are you a recluse that will be unlikely to make friends and therefore needs every possible connection to people including a roommate? Do small rooms bother you (many of the single are very small); i.e. do you have claustrophobic tendencies or tendencies to depression when enclosed in small spaces for lengths of time? Have you shared a bedroom with a sibling and liked that experience?

Many people have loved having roommates. Many people have hated having roommates. Most people are fine with or without a roommate. If you are so conflicted on the issue, then you are probably one of the people that would be fine with or without a roommate, so don’t sweat it.

thanks for the reply violindad!
i meant the second: “Should I request a double room?”

i actually have a major scholarship so i’m pretty sure i get my top pick. i’m trying to choose between New (i’d only pick a single at this rez) and Carrefour (i’d pick either a single or double at this rez). which one would you put as your #1 pick?

on a side note, since new rez and carrefour are hotel rezs, do people tend to pry their doors open (during first few weeks at least), or do they let them auto-shut?

Depends what you value more: food or proximity. New Rez has a better cafeteria (wider selection because there are a lot more residents in New). C4 is closer to campus. Each has other minor advantages (C4 is somewhat newer and the renos seem to be complete now; New has the attached stores).

Another New Rez fan.

May I ask whether it’s common to regularly visit friends at some other dorm and know friends of theirs?(like if the two dorms are pretty close) Any inter-dorm activity?
Or most people just make friends within their own dorm?(excluding friends made in class/activity)

arsenaleung, i’m not 100% sure, put i’m pretty sure most people would tend to stay within their own dorm, just because it’s more convenient. i’ve talked to some of my friends in mcgill who said that they occasionally visit other dorms when they go with a few friends.

would it be more difficult to meet people at New Rez if i stay in a single there? i’ve heard that New Rez is in a V-shape, and that the singles are located at the tips of the V (ie. the edges of the building). can someone please confirm/clarify this? thanks :)

I think it takes a very special person to benefit more from having a roomate. I lived in a single and I liked having my own space where I could have privacy to sleep, study, and do other things. I thought it might prevent socializing but thats not the case at all. People gather in the hallways, bathrooms, common room, games room, and each other’s rooms to socialize. You don’t have to worry about a roommate stumbling in at 2 in the morning or blasting music when you want to study. As far as cafs go, I would say RVC>New rez>upper rez.

^ great info, but would u happen to know about the caf in Carrefour?

Im choosing between RVC, C4 and New Rez, and the deadline is in a few days :(

never been to c4 but it would probly be similar to new rez

^ thanks. I plan to put it down as my first choice because its smaller, since i would not like a Rez which is too big and in to partying a lot.

But how is the food there? I heard it sucks as compared to RVC or New…

i’ve seen the caf at carrefour and it is really, really small! there is defs not as much selection when compared to RVC or New Rez.

however, i think you also get something called flex dollars, which can be used in other cafs (like RVC) and on other restaurants on campus. also, you have a lot of accessible options in the city – you would probably get tired of the caf food eventually, no matter which caf you had

personally, i didn’t factor cafs into my rez decision all that much

^ thanks, how did u rank them?
