Should I get an air fryer (2022 edition)

Costco has its dimensions listed:

  • 13.98L x 14.02 W x 14.53 H: Weight; 23.8 Lbs

Looks reasonable to me.

Yes, size seems fine to replace current toaster oven I have which is not small.

I looked it up on Amazon too (obviously higher price) to read some more reviews

Oops. The dimensions are for the Sur La Table oven. I thought you meant that one!

If you don’t like it, returns are much easier at Costco than many other places.

Oh gosh, I totally thought that Amazon one WAS the Sur La Table! When I searched that came up and it looks so similar I didn’t check the brand name! LOL.

That was our logic and why we decided to give it a try.

I got the Dash last year to try it out. There are just 2 of us. We mostly use it to roast vegetables. A little oil and seasoning on cut up squash, air fry 400 for about 10 min. Since we tend to put a lot in I shake it a couple of times and that works great. Same process for roasted potatoes but about 25 min shaking every 5-10. Since we eat a lot of roasted veggies we love it doesn’t heat the whole oven and it does do them faster. It’s also great for reheating pizza😀. Our son has a Cuisinart larger one and does meat in his. He did some fabulous lamb chops when we were there.

I finally broke down and bought one a couple weeks ago, based on a Cooks Illustrated article. I hate keeping things on my counters so haven’t been excited about something that would live on the counter. I measured first and can fit mine in the cabinet below but have found that I don’t mind having it out as much as I thought I would. This is the one that won their test of 16 models:

This is the one I bought - it was Cooks Illustrated’s “Upgrade Pick”. The $30 cost difference wasn’t enough to deter me from going with the higher level product.

I also bought these parchment liners that were recommended in the article.

I’ve only used it a few times but have been pleased. I used the parchment liners and haven’t done any clean up at all. These liners fit this model perfectly.

I needed a new oven and when my first order got messed up, the model with built-in air fryer was cheaper, so I got it by default. I still haven’t figured out what I want to use it for, so I appreciate all the ideas. Maybe I’ll try some chicken or fish. I’m mostly just cooking for myself these days.

I have the Breville toaster oven air fryer. I honestly rarely use it. I use it for frozen French fries. I find it messy— the oven door gets all greasy and the bottom of the toaster oven also gets greasy. I think I’d get the Sur Le Table Costco one - one dedicated for air frying.

I bought on amazon ($33) EliteGourmet by Maximatic 1 Qt this past year for our camper van as it uses very little electricity (700 watts). We tried it out at home first. We liked it so much ( H is a foodie) that we just keep stored in the kitchen cupboard. This is perfect for one or two people. Very little oil and healthy.

The best things we found so far in order of preference:

  1. A whole potato makes a wonderful batch of French fries
  2. Pillsbury cinnamon rolls the small size ones- come out perfect
  3. Okra frozen and breaded bag- comes out crispy
  4. Daring ‘chicken’ nougats plant based comes out great

When our current microwave dies we plan on getting the combined microwave/airfryer.

I’m going try my new Air Fryer tomorrow, I’ve been waiting for cooler weather. Is it true if this is my first time using this machine, I need to set it longer 3-5 minutes before I cook my food. How do you do that anyway. You put it on for 3-5 minutes, then insert the food in?

It is like pre-heating an oven. You turn it on with nothing in it and let it heat up. Personally, I never do that. I just cook for time required and then test for doneness.

Thank You, I will try that tomorrow.

Bumping this up so I can read through it again AND to see if anyone has a new opinion/suggestion.

I got rid of my toaster oven about two months ago and really hesitate to get another “something” because it’s SO nice not to have it on the counter! I think I’ve talked myself out of the toaster oven/air fryer combos. Too much appliance and I jist am not convinced the air fryer portion will work as well as a air fryer alone. With summer coming I thought this might be useful to use the oven less.

I’ll look at Sur La Table again because I REALLY prefer a small footprint. I’ll probably mostly use it jist for the two of us or even just for myself so don’t think I need jumbo.

I started with the small simple Dash air fryer but soon realized we love veggies done in the air fryer and the small one just wasn’t big enough. We now have the ninja with larger basket and more flexibility. We’re happy with it for just the 2 of us.

For as often as we use it, our inexpensive Dash works just fine for everything we want to make for just one or two of us.

And it’s pretty compact.

We almost always use our toaster oven for toasting (which means often in this house). The air fryer function is nice once in a while, but I suspect real air fryers work lots better.
