Should I get an Associate in Arts Degree, or an Associate in Science Degree?

I’m a 17 year old currently enrolling in my local community college. I got my GED, (long story), and am trying to take the next step in life. I do want to eventually transfer to a 4 year school. Whatever career path I choose, it will most likely be in the healthcare field, and I might choose to apply for a nursing program after my two years at community college. Which degree would be better if I did decide to go into nursing? What are the main differences between the two degrees? Thanks so much!

If you are planning on going to get a nursing degree at a four-year school, what degree you get is not that important; what is important is that you get all the nursing prerequisites done and do well in them. The nursing prerequisites tend to be pretty consistent at nursing programs; it would be helpful to identity a few four-year schools that you might be interested in and look at their requirements. You will probably be placed in a general liberal arts program or perhaps a health science degree which will allow you to take the prerequisites.

To answer your question about an AS versus AA: An AS degree typically requires more credits in math and natural sciences, while the AA has more credits in the humanities. The CC you attend will have specific programs/majors that will specifically identify the courses you need to earn the degree. Your best bet is to meet with an admissions counselor at the CC and they should be able to identify the best program for you.

I would do whichever would allow you to complete nursing pre-reqs easier.
