should I go after ap scholar awards?

Hey guys, I was wondering if I should try to get one of the ap scholar awards. I was thinking about either the AP Scholar with Honor or the AP Scholar with Distinction.

usually this would not make much of a difference on a college app. However, my school only offers 3 ap classes (Spanish, Stats, and Calc), of which Im taking Calc AB next year as a junior and the other two as a senior.

During my sophmore year i took world history (5) and bio (4).

So basically what im trying to say is that would it look good on my college app if i were to get the AP Scholar with Honor considering my situation?

Umm…yeah, having it is going to be better than…not having it. It’s not really difficult to ace 5 AP’s, so it’s not exactly a prestigious award, but it definitely looks good for you to take every ap your school offers.

yes, you should go for it, but aim higher! I think you should really go for National through self-studying some exams, and even though it’s very unreasonable: try for State scholar

No, it would not look good at all if you got that award.
…

If you want to make that your goal, then go for it! But don’t fixate so much on what the college wants to see. Take the classes that interest you and do well in them. Good luck and have fun learning! (: I think colleges would appreciate that more than anything.

yeah, do what Stimulus say. Go for national cuz u’ll feel more motivated and when u receive that national scholar award, u’ll feel a new-found confidence in urself. try for State Scholar - not a good idea.

Haha ridiculous… even in the “Midwest” (where you live), a State Scholar award requires somewhere in the minimum range of 15 AP’s, with a decent average to boot. National scholar is doable with as many AP’s as you have, but if you want that distinction in time for College apps then you need to finish getting 8 exams done your junior year… which is possibly too much…

“Haha ridiculous… even in the “Midwest” (where you live), a State Scholar award requires somewhere in the minimum range of 15 AP’s”

I’ve seen as low as nine.

Nine is certainly possible but out of all of the figures I’ve heard, that’s the lowest. I’m not saying it can’t happen but he may bust his ass to get 10 or so and in all likelihood get beaten by someone with 13-15.

But in any case, most of the reason I found that ridiculous is that he asked if Scholar with Distinction would look good because his school only offers like 5 AP classes… and then people jump in and tell him to go for the hardest achievement that is determined very arbitrarily, and that he may have to take twice as many self study exams as class-taught exams in order to get. Haha

and btw, you don’t find out state scholar until way after admissions

The most important thing to remember regarding AP exams is that it is the QUALITY that counts. not the quantity. Case in point, a girl from my school got all 5s on four exams and got into four Ivies, while another kid who took ten but didn’t do as well was rejected from almsot all. Five 5s will look much better than two fives and three 3s, for instance.

@michaelwiggins: haha thank you for understanding my question. And by the way my school only offers 3 aps. and i self studied two sophomore year.

@ noreally: yeah I understand that, thats why im not planning on taking more than 2 aps next year. Im taking ap calc ab, but im wondering whether I should self study one ap next year so that i can say that i got the ap scholar with distinction.
