Should I go all out with APs?

I'm going to be a junior next year, but my school does not offer very many AP classes. Next year's schedule includes AP US Gov/Comp Pol and AP Chem, but thats all I can take as a junior (a lot of AP classes have stupid prerequisite honors classes that you have to take, while others are limited to senior year). I haven't taken any AP tests so far.

Senior year I plan on doing AP English (maybe both Lit/Lang exam wise), AP Bio, AP Physics, AP Calc BC, AP USH, and AP French Language, all of which are classes that I can only take senior year. I know that colleges won't be able to see my senior year AP results, and since I'm taking essentially 3 AP tests junior year (my other classes are all honors), I've been thinking about self-studying a few APs.

Some possible ideas are: Macro and Micro (I'm probably going to take these), World/Euro, Psych, Environmental Science, Human Geography, basically any AP that might be easy.

I'm more inclined toward any AP that is memorization-based, since I think memorization is easier than learning challenging concepts without a teacher. My school doesn't offer any courses that even remotely prepare for the APs I've mentioned, but I have some background in the more general APs (World esp.).

I would greatly appreciate any feedback regarding my situation. What are the easiest APs to self-study? Are 504539 APs really necessary to get into top-notch schools (ex. that National AP scholar award - 8)? I don't want to throw my junior year away studying for 10 APs, but I'd like to do as many as possible, for the knowledge and college admissions.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you.....

my school only offers 2 AP's to juniors (APUSH & APChem)....so i also plan to self-study. So far, i have heard that AP Psych, AP Human geo., and AP Environmental S. are the easiest. I plan to self-study AP Statistics(kinda easy), and AP Human Geography.

Since you said you are inclined toward memorization based APs, I reccomend that you take AP Psych(very easy), and AP Human Geo.(mostly just a lot of Vocab). These test are easy, and only require that you basically know the vocabulary.

Good luck with your AP courses

"Are 504539 APs really necessary to get into top-notch schools (ex. that National AP scholar award - 8)?"

No. My daughter, who attends a school that offers many, many APs, took 3 junior year and 3 more senior year. In other words, she took a modicum if them but didn't overdo it. She got into Pomona, Vassar, Middlebury and William & Mary. I doubt seriously self-study in "Human Geography" (whatever that is) is going to make a dime's worth of difference to your application.

NO!

As Aristotle said (and it still holds true):

Moderation in everything

johnshade offers good advice.

Yes. I regret not taking more AP classes freshman, sophomore, and junior year.

Not for college admissions, just to learn.

Thanks for the responses.

Would AP World/Euro be out of the question in terms of self-studying? I'm not sure how difficult those tests are, but I personally have an interest in history and would like to learn those areas. I may do that, and opt out of the actual AP test, but if they aren't too difficult, I might as well take them....

colleges wont care if you take the easy exams. They know which ones are the very easy ones, and they wont put as much weight as they would Euro or World History. If you could take both of those, that would look better than taking the easy ones.

I hate history, but I self-studied APUSH 2 weeks before the exam and am pretty confident I got a 5. I would be very surprised if someone who actually has an interest in history couldn't do the same for World or Euro.

world and euro would be very easy to self study if you are a decent writer. learning the formats for the essays is very important, but besides that its simple. geography is mostly vocabulary and could be self studied in a matter of hours, and psych is just as easy.

Thanks for the feedback!
I'll probably look into World/Euro. In your opinions, which one is easier in terms of the test?
And sorta off the subject, but has anyone on CC taken AP Chinese? I'm Chinese, but not completely fluent/literate.

Euro is based more on trends, while world is more strict memorization.

Going all out on APs does train one's discipline greatly though.

I'm not taking pointless APs like Human Geo and ES but taking around 10 (in total) to really concentrate on each AP course and ace the exam. I know some people here at CC can probably use a review book for a few days and ace the AP exam, but I am much more interested in actually learning and understanding the material completely in order to get the benefit from these "college courses."

I'm now contemplating whether I should take APUSH or AP Stats senior year (as a class), then take the other through self-studying. Its pretty much mutually exclusive in my schedule, so any suggestions on which is easier to self-study and get a 5?

i heard that AP Stats is REALLY hard to learn, without a teacher. all the kids in my school say they bombed the AP test. you should take APUSH because its the most common among juniors and if u read/memorize u will get a 5
