I've been working on my presidential scholarship application (due Thursday), but I'm wondering if I should send it in. As far as I can see, the reward isn't any money for college but instead a trip to Washington DC. While I'd love to go to Washington DC, I don't think I'll be in the country the week the ceremony is going to be.

My main question is should I even fill out the application. I sort of feel like if I fill it out and win, then I'll be taking the opportunity for an amazing trip from someone who would enjoy it. Two of my friends are among the other girls nominated from my state, and both of them would never be able to afford a trip to Washington DC unless they had an opportunity like this. However, my mom says that if I win this it would help with future scholarships. Is that true? And if it is, would it help enough to justify taking the award from someone who would be able to fully enjoy it (in other words, would it help me get a LOT more money)?

I don't see how winning one scholarship would give you an advantage to get another. Not unless this scholarship is a stepping stone for a monetary one.

I do not like to go against any parent's advice but it sounds as if you are having very valid arguments against applying for a scholarship in which you would not use.

Research the scholarship a little more and sit with your mom and have a good heart to heart.

Just to clarify... You mean Presidential Scholars, not Presidential Scholarship, I think. Scholarship implies money, but this has no money attached.

If you've already had your school fill out that terrible form, I'd say you're kind of morally obligated to try. Man that thing was terrible.

I thought I didn't want to apply also. But I already had my GC fill out the Secondary School Report, so I'm giving it a shot. Still have to... write the essays... Good thing I can use some of my college essays! XP Also, I think it might be very helpful for a resume/future endeavors - after all, they DO only pick 1 girl and 1 boy from each state. I wouldn't feel so bad about applying... the likelihood of any one person getting it probably isn't that great anyway, considering that ALL of the people applying had VERY high scores and therefore, with all likelihood, are VERY strong applicants.

But, at the same time, it does seem kind of pointless, given the lack of money involved, and the fact that it's just an all-expenses paid trip. So.. I don't really know...
