I got into Syracuse and they are giving me money. Does Emerson have any real liberal arts classes? So, should I bother? I might for fun.

Syracuse is an exellent school too, plus if they're going to give you money I'd definatley send in my deposit. I'd probably put my name on the waiting list , what can it hurt. What did you out down for your first and second choice major at Emerson?

Broadcast Journalism

Television/ Video

I want to apply to Emerson for Broadcast Journalism next year...I am a junior. Would you hate me if I asked your stats, so I could tell where I sorta stand. I think my gpa is low for there.

My gpa and class rank are what killed me.

1310
3.7w
class rank 100 out of 350? (yeah, i suck)
eagle scout
president, vice-president, treasurer, and founder of 4 different clubs
3 APs
director of plays
arts magnet school for media arts for 2 hours everyday (my school didn't put it on my transcript but I had that teacher do a recommendation)
strong recommendations
essay was probably a little weak
I sent in the videos I have made so far
work part-time
volunteer

I think that sums me up.

Wow, if they rejected you they are really going to reject me. I'm only a junior but I expect about a 3.4/SAT 1950 and my EC's aren't nearly as impressive. kittie_rocks, how about you?

Don't worry. I was not that great in the classroom at all. I was a little shocked though. haha. I have no idea what a 1950 is like. And I wasn't rejecteed, I was waitlisted.

makam, hey, I am scared now too. I was looking at what collegeboard and my Fiske book said about Emerson, and according to their standards, it seemed I was in the ballpark or just about.

I have a 3.55/Sat 1850 :-( (I will take it twice more though)...and I do have really good ecs- editor of newspaper/literature magazine, student council.., founded a club, volunteer stuff, other activities..et cetera. However, my sat is so low. *waiting on gov. school for creative writing, at the moment I am a semi-finalist.

What other schools are you looking at makam? We might be able to help each other through the process next yr, or at least, provide some moral support. :-)

ps...my school doesn't rank.

kittie-I'm going to tour Emerson on Tuesday then shoot over to Northeastern and do them too. I'm also interested in Fordham, American, Marist and Southern New Hampshire at this point but that could change. I'm going into digital media and Emerson is my top choice on paper. I think I heard somewhere that any of the journalism majors at Emerson are the most competitive and hardest to get into, I'll ask on Tues.

john- did you visit Syracuse? What did you think. Several people have recommended it to me and I've heard good things.

Oh, well..when you get back on tuesday, try to come and post and tell me what you think. Actually, I will be touring Fordham on May 2nd.

Yes, find out about the journalism major at Emerson :-)
and..have a good time.

I love Syracuse. Their communications program is amazing. Cold but great campus. The larger student population will cancel out the smaller city.

Emerson isn't going to completely rely on a minimum GPA and SAT score, so don't fret too much. They really emphasize wanting an interesting and unique student body, so your extracurriculars and essay need to say alot. Of course you scores matter, but having an SAT score below Emerson's average is not fatal at all.

I got into emerson, but decided not to go to the school. I had a 3.4 gpa with 1180 SAT's (780 V, 400 M, yeah..I never really liked math).

My essays were excellent, however my Extracurric.'s were lackluster, apart from an impressive set of community service hours and awards. I submitted a short story as well. I write alot, but I've never really submitted my stories to any contests or anything of the sort...so, I had to explain that in my essay.

I don't think grades matter so much, at least in comparison to your unique talents.

Thanks marissal and zzzzurzulo, you've made me, and I'm sure kittie, feel better. I'm heading up to Boston this morning to visit Emerson and Northeastern, can't wait!
