I tried doing a google search for this but the only questions that address trying to make this decision are in regards to going to top private universities and ivys and the like(of course this would be like a dream come true, but I’m trying to be realistic here seeing as I’m probably not private school material if my college grades turn out to be like my high school grades nor do I have private school money). However I’m not well educated on the kinds of scholarships available so I could be wrong. When it comes to wanting to transfer to a public 4 year school that requires exceptional grades, such as Stony Brook or University at Buffalo, would me getting high grades in a community college hurt my chances at getting into schools like that? I hear that getting high grades at a senior college holds a bit more weight considering the curriculum, but I also hear CUNY in general is frowned upon so I’m not quite sure what to think. As I said I can’t find much insight googling this, just personal anecdotes and opinions about CUNY.
Who is giving you this crazy advice?
If you aren’t admitted to Stony Brook or Buffalo, studying at any of the NYS CCs will work fine for you to get you ready to transfer. Check the websites of the places you think you would like to end up at, and see what articulation agreements they have for your major. If you complete those courses, you will be an auto admit.
You also can meet with the transfer advisor at the CC you would be attending, and get help devising an appropriate study plan for your first two years.
If you need financial aid, remember that the best merit-based aid normally goes to students who enroll as freshmen. However, some places do have special scholarships for transfer students who have excellent grades at their CCs. That is something else to as the transfer advisor about.
I meant transferring to stony brook or buffalo, not starting there. The 4 year college I’m curious starting at is city tech, which I have a good chance of getting into.
Community college sounds like the best option. Most, but not all, schools give preference to those coming from CC. You save money and I think it’s easier getting great grades at a CC vs a university
