Should I go to APU or CSUN?

Hello, I'm currently a senior in high school and plan on going to California for college. For those of you who don't know, CSUN is a public university meaning I would have to pay out of state tuition and APU is a private, Christian school? It's more expensive than CSU but soo far I do have a scholarship there. I'm more towards APU right now, I even already turne in my tuition and housing deposit but before I make my decision, I would really like some opinions on people who are very familiar with at least one of these two schools or the CSU system. I know CSUN as a public school is highly affected by the state budget and kids can't always register for their classes and can't always graduate in 4 years. Does anyone who go to CSUN or a CSU experience any of these things. Also, do you know if CSUN would award me any financial aid?

It really depends on what your major is and what you want out of the school. If you are looking for a Christian environment, then it seems the private school would be best.

Yes, the CSU schools are impacted, and there are reports of students not getting classes, etc.

also, do you want a large or small school? suburban or urban campus?

If you haven’t visited them, it would make sense to do so before you decide.

I live about 15 min from APU. As long as you don’t mind the religious aspect and going to chapel I think it’s a lot better than csun.

Csun has lots of students on campus but is also a commuter school. Apu is going to give you a better college experience and I think it’s in a nicer area.

As for the education. Apu in my book accepts quite a few students. Csun is no different though. You should be able to get your classes at apu and at csun who knows. Plus with ca in such a financial disaster apu might turn out being cheaper. My personal opinion says out of state tuition for csun is not worth it.

APU

 • Small religious school
 • Just as expensive as USC or Stanford, but with little name recognition
 • More personal attention and class availability

CSUN

 • Large public school near Los Angeles
 • Very economical even if you don’t receive any free money
 • Less personal attention, you’re a number here, class availability isn’t as bad as it seems but also not as good as a private school
 • This is the school that a lot of people in Los Angeles/Hollywood go to if they can’t get into UCLA or USC but it’s still better than CSULA or CSUDH
 • Good Business and Communication schools

You need to think about what you need and want out of College…do you need the extra attention? If so, then APU is for you…if not, then CSUN will be just fine. In my opinion APU is overpriced and unnecessary when there are so many good public schools in California. APU is not really ranked any higher than CSUN so if you’re looking for prestige they’re on the same level. Unless APU offers a specific program that CSUN does not, I would never recommend anyone go to APU simply because it’s expensive.

In the end, a degree from APU will hold the same weight as a degree from CSUN. I had friends who attended schools like APU, La Verne, Chapman…and I also have friend who attended CSUN. They all make about the same money, but the CSUN grads don’t have loans. Buuut if money is not a concern, then go with APU!

APU tuition = $30k
CSUN tuition = $5k

SMCguy: I completely agree that APU is not really ranked any higher than CSUN. After you graduate you will just have your degree. However, isn’t barbie93 coming from out of state. Not that it makes a huge difference but it does change the tuition to out of state. Which is more like 12K right? Plus expense, etc.

On getting financial aid. You will probably get more from APU but it won’t make it cheaper than CSUN. It might make them closer to each other but APU will still cost more.

On getting your classes and CSUN being impacted. I’m sure there is info online. I am pretty sure that the issue of getting classes is based on your major. Majors get impacted, not the schools? I don’t have any friends at CSUN but I know friends at SDSU that have problems getting their classes because their major is impacted.

Well I plan on majoring in computer science which is impacted at CSUN.
Also, regarding the APU cost, I do wanna clarify that it is not as expensive as USC. USC’S cost of attendance is about 55000 while APU’S is 38000 (bid difference)

And when it comes between APU and CSUN, while there may or may not be a 30000 difference, but at APU I already have a scholarship there, plus with the APU grant which is 10000 and they also have other grants, plus pell grant, I’ll definetely be close to cover my cost of attendance and when it comes to CSUN, the only thing I can expect is pell grant.
