I was totally overjoyed when I got accepted to UCB, yet now I'm trying to consider my options. I got accepted to some privates, and I've heard a great deal about the protests over tuition hikes and education cuts at Berkeley. Some of my friends who attended UCB also complained about there being almost no classes due to cuts. At a private college, there are obviously smaller class sizes and, even though there is higher cost, I'm convinced that there is more funding for classes and education in general. However, with the budget fiasco the UC system is facing currently, I'm wondering whether it's really logical to attend just to gain the prestige.

I cannot tell youuuu how much this post aligns with what is going on inside my head!!! Those are the same things that I am considering I am so confused right now, I am out of state and usually out of state kids have less chances right? Well I heard that atleast 3 kids got in this year(including me) and there are more in other schools who got in. I 'm pretty sure it had to do with the money that we will be bringing in…is it a wise choice to go to Cal if they only want us for our money? I am so frustrated!!! My whole family was so excited and overjoyed, and then I saw the financial award and contribution expected…and I was dumbfounded…Does it even matter where you go as an undergrad? I know that if i go to Cal i will have higher chances for getting into top tier schools for graduate school, which does count! …O_o

I know… I have the same dilemma. What complicates it even more for me is the financial side of this whole choosing game. I am a Canadian citizen and have a pretty good shot of getting into University of Toronto paying Canadian tuition. Considering University of Toronto is not all that far behind UCB (education-wise), and all of the problems U of C seems to be having, I don’t know what to do…

I’m in the same situation. I heard a rumor that at some California schools, so many classes have been cut that there is a limited number of hours one can take a year, and therefore you must graduate in a minimum of 5 years…Has anyone heard this?

cport92 - absolutely zero truth as far as Cal is concerned. In fact, the school continues to have regulations to keep students from spending extra semesters there - a max number of units is in place, the minimum units per semester remain the same as they have been, and one would need extraordinary permissions to continue beyond 8 or so total semesters.

There are also some new processes in place to ensure that everyone gets the classes they need . . . reserving reading and comp. requirement class space for first or second years, et cetera. And honestly, I don’t know how one could possibly say that there are almost no classes at Cal. There is still a huge variety of diverse classes to choose from. What seems to be happening is that a section or two will get cut, which means that your desired schedule may not fit into your desired time slot, but that is a choice you will have to make!

So…I’ve been going through the same thing as well. I’ve dreamt about going to Berkeley since I was in 7th grade, but now when I got accepted and saw my financial aid I was stunned. Is it worth going there where I have to pay more than twice of what I’m paying to go to another university? My mom is willing to put me there if I set my heart to go.

Having same problems!!! The one and only aspect keeping me from enrolling to Cal is tuition.

I’ve narrowed down choices to UW and UC Berkeley

Berkeley has been one of my dream schools and so I was really really really happy to be admitted; I’m wanting to major in either law or international relations/studies which Berkeley is really well known for (grad).

UW is awesome because I’m WA resident and UW is only hr away so I’m pretty familiar with the area (of course, UW being so huge, I’ve only explored so much). i could commute if needed as well since I’m not too fond of their dorms and Seattle isn’t the best place for apartments either…

I received no aid from them either. Both schools being public and my father’s income = no aid :(

Money is the only issue Berkeley will cost me estimate $216 grand for undergrad, UW will cost me $90 grand, if not less, for undergrad. The difference is just too much to overlook.

My dad is all for Berkeley and he’s totally committed to paying…and I love and appreciate him so much for that support - but I also can’t accept it. I feel so wrong having my father pay so much for my education It’s tearing me apart trying to decide!!!

I’m stuck alongside all of you guys!!! Is it really worth it to go to Berkeley?

same problemm!.. as an international student im confused if i should still go to berkeley with all the budget problems… i have an offer from imperial college in uk as another option. what do u guys think?
