I live in Miami and i have always wanted to go to boarding school. I have chosen one up in froward, North Broward Prep. Its not very know like exeter or deer field but it is one of the top 20 schools in Florida. Its mostly day students (about 60%) and about 90% of the boarders are not from the US. the school i want to go to is about an hour away with no traffic and about an hour and a half to two hours with traffic. I sometimes feel silly for wanting to go to a school that could easily be a day school for me. What should I do? what do you think? also how are parties and outside social life, and will my family want to spend all my free time with me? i am planning as going as a 5 day boarder. ps (know this is a fucking long question) could i hang out after school (if i won’t have prep) with my day student friends?
Well, it depends, what is it about BS that interests you? And what is it about Broward Prep? Without knowing why you want to make this change, it is pretty hard to give input.
A few blunt observations. Florida is not well known for its schools compared to other regions. I am not sure if “Top 20 in Florida” is a good value if you really want to board. I would think you would be better off going further away and being a full boarder at a stronger school, if that suits your skill set and ambitions. There are a lot of choices between Exeter and Broward Prep!
Also, I think BS where boarders are the minority are very different than “true” BS. Will you feel at home and bond with the Day or the Boarders? Are the int’l kids cliquish?
I do not think a school that is an hour “with no traffic” is a day option! You can’t waste 2hrs a day commuting when you need to focus on academics and sports and EC’s to be competitive. And when you are traveling, it WILL be in traffic, since school day schedules closely mimic work days.
Of course, if you are your family really want you to be just a 5-day boarder, I suppose that limits your choices.
thank you 6teenSearch i know that this school isn’t THE best school but I do think its the school for me. i think that boarding at this school will be best since i will be doing a sport after school and practice can run all the way up to 9pm
I’m unfamiliar with Broward so I can’t answer many of your questions. That said, boarding school can be a wonderful opportunity to form deep bonds with classmates and professors. In a situation such as your where you spend almost all your time at school anyway being at a Boarding School can be great as you don’t have all of the commuting time.
Of course, Boarding school isn’t for everyone and it does have a considerable expense.
BellaWinter,
Then you have answered your own question! And I don’t think you should “feel silly” at all for wanting to board, it is far too much to commute IMHO. Good luck!
Have you looked at St. Andrews in Boca?
