Should I go to Haverford?

@sugarguitar

Have you made a decision?

Still deciding… it’s between HC and Whitman.

THANK YOU everyone. I made the decision yesterday of going to Haverford!

Congratulations sugarguitar. My S will be there as well. I am sure you will run into him if you join the Facebook group.

Just my two cents and please, no one get offended by this. I visited haverford about 2 months ago and just after 5 minutes on campus I already wanted to shoot myself in the foot. I attempted to talk to a senior graduating this year and he was stuttering and couldn’t hold a conversation. It seemed like much of the student body was like this. I won’t go any further into how underimpressed I was, especially with the campus, for fear of ****ing some people off but hc does not seem like the fit for you, especially if you like to party…

whoops looks like i was a little too late haha. oh well good luck

Although I’ve made my decision already, I still would like to thank you for telling me these. I’ve lived a party life for a while and now I just want a change. I want to go somewhere different and experience something new; I want to go somewhere where my intelligence is highly appreciated; I want to meet guys who like to talk about philosophy and politics and who actually stutter when talking to me:)It might be hard for me at first, but I’m sure that I’d have a blast at haverford.

Good luck to you too!

@Englishjw: Facebook is blocked in China :(

@Englishjw: I’m so jealous of you! There’s nothing to be held in China. No reception, nothing. I emailed the admission office a few days ago saying I’d love to volunteer to hold a reception of Haverford, BMC and Swarthmore here in Beijing, but they did not reply:(

englishjw-

your visit must have gone well! S is going, too, and very excited. We will be flying in the night of the 22nd to drop him off.

sugarguitar-

I am happy you decided!

@Arkhaik “Shoot yourself in the foot?” Come on dude, really?? You’re so dramatic… LOL… just makes me want to set my hair on fire.

Given HC grads tend to be a generally happy and successful bunch (for example, so far counting this year, 1 Rhodes Scholar and 2 Watson Fellows which is unmatched by any top 20 LAC this year), your observation must mean 1 of 2 things. Either 1) the majority of kids as you write are indeed socially awkward basket cases but their stuttering social awkwardness is trained out of them by the phenomenal education received at HC or 2) perhaps your post is… um… a bit overstated?

@sugarguitar. When I 1st read the description you wrote of yourself, I don’t know but the 1st thing that came to mind when you mentioned Beijing girl that likes to party at hot clubs was the opium den-like Asian club in the Janet Jackson video “If” [Janet Jackson - If-???](http://dv.ce.cn/video/2007/09/26/180137.html) . Dark and edgy doesn’t describe Haverford… I mean, come on, they have an annual pinwheel day. [Haverford College Pinwheel Day 2008 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!](Haverford College Pinwheel Day 2008 | Founders Green on Pinw… | Flickr) Given the additional things you clarified though, I think HC will be a better fit than what I 1st thought. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy yourself and perhaps any social challenges if they happen for you.

Right now is a very busy time for the admissions office. They are dealing with replies from accepted students, petitions from people on the waitlist and probably a lot regarding financial aid too. Did you e-mail someone specific in the admissions office? I’d be surprised if you e-mailed someone specific (admissions director?) and they didn’t get back to you. You may also want to e-mail someone from the international students’ association and ask if there is a current student from Beijing who may be your campus contact? Who knows, maybe they would want to host this with you?

I know this isn’t an ideal position you’re in as you’ve never visited the campus before. Below are some older posts by NEHser who came from Taipei and they give you his/her impression of HC as an international student. Hope they help.

<a href=“Why Haverford? - Haverford College - College Confidential Forums”>Why Haverford? - Haverford College - College Confidential Forums;

It’s definitely convenient to shop/buy stuff. You can go up and down Lancaster Ave and it’s lined with restaurants, shops, banks, grocery stores, bookstores, movie theaters etc. (and colleges!) from Narberth to Rosemont, which is as far as I’ve biked. It would take more than an hour to bike between those 6 towns, so imagine how many shops I’m talking about! Yeah, it definitely helps to have a bike, but it’s not absolutely necessary and most people walk. Some lucky ones drive!

As for going into the city, I know a lot of people who are too lazy to go, but my friends and I go pretty regularly into the city to shop and go to Chinatown. I also visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Some people may also go for community service or events that FAB (a student organization) organizes once a month. It’s really easy to go to the city even if you don’t have a car - which would apply to most people. You can either take the train or the high-speed trolley r100. Once in the city, you can use the incredibly efficient bus or subway system. It is a little expensive, so you probably wouldn’t want to be going every weekend, but I highly encourage people to check out the city.

Again, the really great thing is that you don’t need a car. A car can make your live easier, but most people - 70 percent at least! - get along without a car. Freshmen are not even allowed to have cars on campus. Though, if you want to bring one, all you have to do is park outside.

About the social life at Haverford…What people say is true - it is whatever you make of it. You hang out with as many and as few as you like. You can constantly keep expanding your circle or just maintain the same little group. There are people who are politically active, apathetic, quiet, outgoing, nerdy, athletic, weird, rich, poor, nice, white, black, brown, etc. You can find a wide range of people here. I would say that there aren’t that many “extreme” people and that most people have respect for the Honor Code (or at least for the ideal Honor Code). Most people also care about their academics, and you won’t find “dumb jocks.” Most of the sporty people are also smart, or maybe I should say that most of the “nerdy” people are also quite athletic!

If you like to party, you will find plenty of people to party with, as long as it’s Thurs, Fri, or Sat. Other days people are busy studying and doing other activities. There are always parties on weekends, often several going on at the same time. People also attend Bryn Mawr and Swat parties regularly as the buses/vans still run on weekends, making it easy to get back and forth. If you dislike partying, there are also many people you can hang out with during those party hours; watching a movie together, playing guitar hero, attending a concert/show, going to a special event like Tasty Bites (yum yum), just talking to people, or going into Philly!

Oh, also, I forgot to mention. There is a HUGE mall called King of Prussia that’s 20 minutes by driving away from Haverford. It’s the largest on the east coast, at 2,793,200 square feet (from what wikipedia says ). All the major department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, JC Penny, etc. are there as well as over 400 other stores. You can also get there using the r100 and it takes about 30 minutes. Definitely also worth it to go. I went on Black Friday and spent 10 hours there - and I still wasn’t done!

Hi there,

I admit I’m severely biased, but I think Gummere is the best out of all the freshmen dorms. Gummere has singles and its location is not bad; not as good as Barclay’s, but also not as far away as the apartments. It can be a little noisy sometimes because of the parties in the basement and/or at Drinker House which is next to Gummere, but that’s only on the weekends and I barely even notice it (I’m on the 3rd floor). Some people think it’s like a maze because of the many halls - and the fact that they don’t align - but if you live there you get to know your way around.

Apartments are a little further away from the rest of the campus. It takes about 10 minutes to get “up” campus where the dining center and rest of the buildings are. Freshmen have doubles (though upperclassmen can get singles), 2 pairs per apartment, but there is a rather large living room, a kitchen, and your own bathroom. I lived in the apartments over winter break. In the winter, that 10 minute walk is not fun! However, the apartments are relatively closer to the Mainline and to Ardmore train station.

Barclay would be my last choice…It’s set up so that 3 people live together. Two get side rooms that are singles, but pretty small singles, and one person gets the middle room, but the two side people have to go through the middle room to get in and out. The location is good, right in the middle of campus. It’s structured a differently from Gummere so that there is one long hall, so it’s easier to socialize with everyone in your dorm building vs. the 16 people in your hall in Gummere. It is also currently the only wheelchair accessible building.

However, most people are happy with their dorm or apartment. Even the few people I know who don’t like theirs just spend their time in the dorm/apartment that they like. There are always “adopted” hall members and people find themselves the place (and people) that suit them the most. People who really, REALLY have a problem with the living arrangements can find the administration and move.

The best way to experience Haverford is to come visit us! However, if you can’t pictures are also good. Check out Haverford’s website: Haverford College. There are a lot of pictures and info available.

I never doubted the brilliance of those who attend Haverford, they all seemed like geniuses and that they will be very successful in the future.

sugarguitar

I would think HC, BMC and Swarthmore would be very much in favor of a reception. However, they might prefer to have some of their own representatives there (from admissions) or alumni (who have first hand experience with the school). You may not get a response now but it could be an interesting activity to pursue once you are on campus. I sincerely wish you the best in your next adventure!

Congratulations to you and your S. Yes, we really did enjoy the Open Campus Day. S has already made a number of friends and I am sure your S will do so as soon as he gets on campus.

I just had to add for the person who posted about being under impressed with the campus and thinking that the students are not able to hold their own socially of course you won’t find people posting angry replies in return. HC is in my opinion a wonderful and special place and a big part of what it makes it so special is that the students are very accepting and non-judgemental. If you didn’t like it there that is fine. I am sure most would join me in wishing you well and hoping that you find a school that you love. It will be sad for me when my S graduates in just a few week to not be a part of this community any longer.

Welcome to all the new students and parents!

While on a recent campus visit with my son, I chatted with many current Haverford students. Each and every one was articulate and seemingly happy. At a poster session for senior chemistry students, a couple students explained their reseach to me - a decidedly non-chemist. The ability of a scientist to explain complex science to a layman is a mark that they know their subject deeply. Those students hit the mark, and they were very adept at taking me through their research and answering my naive questions. I was very impressed. Apparently, my son was too. That evening after leaving the Bi-co Orchestra concert, he said “Well, I’m sold”. And he enrolled shortly thereafter.

Congratulations and welcome! My S has had a wonderful four years and I agree that by and large HC students are very articulate. My S will be headed for law school in Sept. I know he will miss the wonderful community he had at HC.

/\ revbon 50 “not be a part of this community anymore?” Oh no, it doesn’t need to be that way! This is coming from someone whose college friends encourage him to be more active with HC alumni activities… my random posts on CC don’t come close to the amount of time some of my friends spend with admissions, career development and alumni activities.
