I got all of my info from my son (from SWIS student announcements), his counselor, and friends on the parent’s council. Not making anything up; just passing on info I was given/read. Yes, you are correct that 2 of the Harvard kids are recruited athletes.

Where did you get your info?

Bottom line…NMH is just as respected by top colleges as the other top boarding schools. Do well and you can rest assured you will get into an excellent school.

Keylyme, I do recant writing that one got into Stanford; two got in. I can tell you with confidence that you’re wrong on the rest. Plus, why do you have access to your son’s SWIS account? That’s kind of weird.

NMH doesn’t have stellar college matriculation compared to other schools in the Eight School Association, but I think it makes up for that in other ways. OP, in response to whether or not you should go to NMH, I would go with what feels right.

He lets me check the student announcements/college acceptances folder. Mature/nice kid. Trusts his mom.

I believe Stanford was five, but I posted the above from memory; I have the list I made in my office and will double-check Tuesday. I am sort of over the top with that kind of thing and I went through page by page tallying up the names and numbers. I admit it is not a very scientific way of doing things, and people could certainly have misstated information, so I cannot say with 100% certainty that my numbers are spot-on. I think it’s fairly accurate, though, given my other sources.

Their matriculation is not as impressive because overall, they tend to not be as selective in admissions due to the lower number of apps they get. However, the GPA definitely gets a boost which reflects the respect the school is given by colleges. My older son got into both Villanova and Lehigh with a 3.1 gpa and only one AP; no hook.

Keylyme, if you went page by page College Announcements, then you are simply making up numbers because I’m looking at it now, and what you claim to be there is not. Even though not everybody posts to College Announcements, word spreads fast if somebody gets into Stanford since it rarely ever happens. This year, for the first time in at least four year, two kids got into Stanford. (One of whom is a post-graduate fyi.) Also, nobody got into Penn (regular decision; one got in ED), Brown, Amherst, Williams (regular decision; one got in ED), Swarthmore, or Dartmouth. Let’s not embellish the facts, please.

The OP has definitely made his/her decision!

And I can tell you from heart that an AMERICAN boarding school education is something VERY different to Chinese kids. We’ll learn to thrive in a totally different culture, meet different people, speak a different language and take good care of ourselves while our parents are thousand miles away. The education system is different too.

For me, if money isn’t an issue, I’ll definitely go!

Yes, you are going to spend about $50,000. So you should beleive that it is worthwhile to spend that much money to go to the school. If you do not believe or if you are not sure that the school is good enough to sepnd that much money, then just forget it!

Yeah, but I guess…ummm the OP has made up his/her mind before applying!
I know PLENTY of kids(and their parents) who don’t really mind spending $50k each year on education.

Hi guys! Just thought I would say some stuff regarding my earlier post about answerbag.

Um… gonnastop, despite your initial assumptions, I’m not actually an old ■■■■■. And I’m not male either. A more accurate description would be an incoming prep who dreams of attending a great BS…

I didn’t mean to offend answerbag, or anybody else for that matter, in any way. My sincerest apologies if I did! Most of the time the worst thing to do when somebody offends you is offend them back. Nevertheless, I do offend people sometimes by accident. But in this situation, answerbag didn’t try to offend me personally. (I think he may have been trying to criticize other opinion threads like this, though, and that’s fine. I just wish he hadn’t used that word…) And as I mentioned earlier, I didn’t mean to offend him or anybody else.

Again: I know I’m saying this a lot, but I really mean it! I didn’t mean to offend anybody! Honest!!! I apologize if I did! I just think that, like answerbag, I have the right to freedom of speech in America. (First amendment) This means that I get to post almost anything I want. And my informing you guys of my opinion on the incorrect use of the word “■■■■■■■■” was just that!

I’m sorry if you think I overreacted. Maybe I did. But the point is, I have the right to overreact and point out what many people don’t realize when they casually swing around the term “■■■■■■■■”. It may not mean much to some people when somebody uses that term to hurt somebody, but it does to me. Like I mentioned in my last post, this is because I have I close relative who really IS ■■■■■■■■ and it really hurts when somebody insults somebody else with that term, because it was never meant to be used as an insult! If it was, every single time my relative went to the hospital for a check in, his neurosurgeon would be insulting him…

Plus, its not like I meant to single out or hurt answerbag in any way. I just used his/her post as an example. I’m sure in real life, answerbag is a truly great person with lots of amazing ideas and opinions that I would love to hear given the chance. :)

Thanks guys! And again, congrats on NMH, shihusheng! It’s an amazing institution. A friend of mine is actually going there next fall as an incoming prep. Maybe you’ll get to meet her. :)

it is true that NMH has a great number of chinese student and nmh is not as prestigious as top schools. however, as far as i can concern, the education provided there has no terrible difference to other’s. whether you will get into top colleges depends on yourselves-----working hard is the best way to make the dream come true in any circumstance.

I do not mean to offend you, luckyduckyme. I am sorry if I hurted you. I think you misunderstood gonnastop and me. And the words “he” and “him” referred to answerbag in last posts from gonnastop and me. However, I apologize if I have offended answerbag.

OH!!! I thought gonnastop meant I was being
an “old ■■■■■” by sticking up for my cousin and that he was telling answerbag that he/she could use whatever language they wanted (which they can of course, freedom of speech. :)) and that they shouldn’t listen to me explaining my situation to them. I was pretty hurt after that, so I’m glad that it was all just a misunderstanding! Sorry for making a big deal out of nothing!!!

PS. Thanks so much for the clarification!!!

Oops sorry luckyduckyme! I just got so annoyed after seeing so MANY ■■■■■■! Thanks for the clarification shuihusheng!(you may need to work on your “past tense”.)

My English is nowhere near “amazing”. There are some foreigners on CC who are really good at English, say, assign, boardingschool, deerfieldswede(or something like that! Sorry!).
