@center haha you make a good point, I feel like I had the stats to get into the schools where I did, but this might have made the difference. Didn’t get me any merit money yet unfortunately!
They’re all good.
If you’re OOS for Michigan and UNC, and aren’t getting any merit or n-b aid from any of them, then according to Kiplinger, the sticker prices are approximately $67K (ND), $60K (Michigan), and $48K (UNC). Since UNC is least expensive (by a fairly wide margin), that may be your most sensible choice (especially considering the high cost of med school.)
How do the costs compare with your in-state options (like Rutgers, since you mention being a NJ resident in other threads)?
ND: niece goes there (another niece graduated a few years ago). Great school; strong alumni network. Good social life. South Bend is meh at best. Both of my nieces adore Notre Dame…could not be happier.
Michigan: I did my graduate work there; our closest friend’s son is a Freshman. Great school, also a strong alumni network. Active greek scene but doesn’t over power the social scene. Ann Arbor is a quintessential college town.
I have friends with kids at UNC who are just thrilled with their experience. I think it really comes down to fit. Any of these schools can launch you on to a great career. Best of luck.
My son went to UNC OOS from the west coast. Initially it was challenging for him because he used a high housing lottery choice to live in a nice dorm but not one where first year students live (big mistake). There were some cultural adjustments to make–OOS enrollment capped at 18% I recall–but by second semester freshman year he was loving it. He joined a fraternity his sophomore year as a way to make the school smaller and made great friends. He worked hard, had a ton of fun, and feels tremendous loyalty for the school. Chapel Hill is a wonderful college town yet part of dynamic Research Triangle (CH, Raleigh and Durham / UNC, NCSU and Duke) You should feel very proud of your colleges choices; if you simply cannot decide, I say pick the one where springtime comes earliest.
I love the way you summed up UNC… our experience was similar ( minus the dorm and frat).
