I will be majoring in fine arts and I was accepted into Mason Gross at Rutgers. The other colleges I was accepted into and am considering are School of Visual Arts and Parsons, both in NYC. I wanted to go to school in the city ever since I could remember and I did a precollege program at SVA and loved it. But, I have a free tuition to Rutgers while at SVA I'd have to pay about $30,000 a year after financial aid and I'm still waiting to hear from Parsons but I doubt it will be much. I want to study philosophy as well. I got into the honors program at SVA which includes philosophy and at Parsons I could get a dual degree at Eugene Lang, their liberal arts school but Rutgers has the second best program in the country.

The positive factors about Rutgers are that I could transfer after two years, minor or double major in Philosophy, study abroad my sophomore year, and I could take the train into the city whenever I want and actually have money to spend. and my mom will be happy.

The negative factors are that Rutgers was my safety school and I didn't even want to apply, and I was so set on going to school in nyc that I don't know that I will be comfortable in the environment. I'm afraid that I will be unhappy with attending Rutgers.

Also, I wanted to go to NYU but didn't get accepted, so if I did really well at Rutgers, do you think I'd have a chance as transferring in? or to a prestigious liberal arts school?

What would you do in my situation? I'm going to sit in on classes and visit my options again but I am so confused and any advice is appreciated!

You can’t beat free ride tuition, why would you want to have debt after you graduate?

I think Mason Gross is very competitive school.

Did you visit both school? I mean Rutgers isn’t that far from the city.

Yes, if you did well in RU of course you can transfer to different school in the city.

Good luck.

LOL is this serious question? Mason gross is a tough school to get into and you don’t want to attend even you are given a free tuition? I would still take a free ride over paying full tuition at harvard.
Have you not heard of student debt? I am not saying that majoring in art won’t give you a lucrative career but :)

thanks for your feedback guys, i guess it’s obvious that i should go to rutgers but i’ve just always been so against it that it’s hard to accept. it seems like the right choice though i just need to hear it from other people so i’m reassured that it’s the right decision. i’m just waiting to hear from parsons on how much financial aid i get but it’s looking like i’m going to rutgers.

I’m having a similar struggle… I was accepted to Rutgers with a full ride for the business and honors programs, but I was accepted to Villanova ($20,000 a year after financial aid) for business as well. I was always against going to Rutgers too, but money talks so I’m having the same struggle and considering the same options in terms of transfering and feeling like a won’t be happy at RU. I don’t know what the best option is for either of us, but just wanted to let you know you’re not alone with this tough choice!

It’s good to hear that i’m not the only one in this situation but i’m also sorry about it haha. But good luck, if we both end up at Rutgers we should keep in touch and make the best it!

So your options for a BFA are a free ride at Mason Gross or pay or go into debt ($120K?) at either SVA or Parsons. And living in NB versus NYC? NYC is very expensive–lots to spend money on here. Unless your parents have unlimited funds and are willing to pay for the whole thing, I think the answer is real clear.

Sure there is so much more here in NYC, where I have lived every year since 1972 (except when I went to college at RU on financial aid/scholarship [full disclosure])–I am amazed anyone graduates from college in NYC.

Think of this: upon graduation, what do you plan on doing? How much will it pay? Will it allow you to pay off your SVA debt AND live?

Here is my two cents–go to Mason Gross and take NJ Transit to NYC anytime you feel a need to. See if you can take summer courses at SVA. You will graduate debt-free–one less thing to worry about especially if you want to make a living in fine arts (not that easy to do as I am sure you know).

Best of luck and enjoy!

I just accepted my offer of admission today to Rutgers! I’m happy about my decision and excited to start!

Congrats. You made the right choice.

Congratulations–enjoy!
