Should I go to Stanford or UCSD? I want to major in Biology. Cost is not a factor for me. UCSD is closer to me... Where would you go?

stanford all the way baby- for me the big time sports, less undergrads, top academics etc- not to mention the prestige bonus if that ever makes a difference

so id go stanford but ucsd is great too

I think everyone on this board would choose Stanford.

UCSD.

Jk. Definitely Stanford no contest

lol is that a joke question?

Stanford-even if cost was a factor, Stanford would probably still be cheaper...Stanford's got one of the best HumBio programs btw...

How can some one that is smart enough to get into Stanford be asking this question?

hewhothrows--LOL i can't agree more.

lol everyone is finding this post to be a joke... this is no joke...

Well if this is not a joke then I think you have your answer. Stanford is overwhelmingly the obvious choice. If 95% choose Stanford over Berkeley and 97% choose Stanford over UCLA. I could only imagine what that % would be for UCSD. You might start a trend! But I doubt it.

The New York Times > Week in Review > Image > Collegiate Matchups: Predicting Student Choices

Keep in mind that most of the 3-5% of students who choose Berkeley or UCLA over Stanford probably did so for financial reasons. After Stanford eliminated tuition for households making less than $100k and all fees for those making less than $60k, I'd expect this percentage to shrink even further.

im_blue is right. My niece chose Berkeley over Stanford many years ago because of financial reason. She did well at Berkeley and end up graduated from Columbia Law School later.

what is wrong with u, tell me u picked stanford

Which College at UCSD. For marine biology, it is probably better than Stanford.

UCSD is NOT better for marine bio than Stanford. Scripps, UCSD's marine bio lab, is only open to grad students. While having a strong marine bio Ph.D program, UCSD offers NEARLY ZERO marine bio to undergraduates. Stanford on the other hand has an excellent undergrad marine bio program.

To the OP: If you can get into Stanford and can afford it, there is absolutely no reason to choose any other school over it (well, maybe Harvard or Yale). UCSD is a great school, but honestly, there is no contest.

Never do that. Not even if the marine bio major is slightly better at UCSD (which I don't think it is). As much as employers/grad adcoms try to be fair, they're still going to look at Stanford as a major plus and UCSD as... above average.

I am a Stanford grad and previously on admission committee (30+ years ago).

Without a doubt, Stanford is one of the best undergrad schools around. Harvard and Yale do not compete in my mind. With exception of labs, all courses are taught by faculty - not TAs.

That being said, I had Linus Pauling for a chemistry teacher. He was great in discussion of how he fed his daughter the "wrong information" - she was dating Watson and Watson used the data to get the Nobel Prize. (confirmed by Watson in the double helix). However, Linus was a TERRIBLE teacher. His comment was "I wrote the book, read it and we will discuss questions", otherwise there were no lectures. I had multiple teachers like that (In fact, 6 had or later had Nobels).

Ravelle College at UCSD is probably the best in the UC system (even better than UCLA). It is as well known (esp in california) as Stanford and some employees respect it MORE (some believe Stanford has grade inflation).

Go see both and ignore people here, find out which you will be happier at. It will not affect your future.

^Ravelle? Revelle college? How come that's the one EVERYONE told me to put absolutely last on my choices (including my own sister who goes to UCSD..)

To the OP omg omg tell me you chose Stanford!

I clicked onto this thread also thinking...you've got to be kidding me.

The thing is, even if your heart is set on Marine Biology, I would suggest that you go to a school that is more prestigious with smaller classes and professors/research opportunities are more vast because you might change your major in the middle (that's what usually happens)..

but it's past 5/1 so there's no point debating now. lol.

elisabanana
Probably because Revelle is the hardest of all the colleges and is where the science nerds go. It is the only one that try to give a Renasance education.

Ok, I picked Stanford. I hope I picked the right choice. So is Stanford really a prestigious school and is well known? Does it carry the same prestige as Harvard and Yale?
