Should I go to TAMS (Texas Academy of Math and Science)?

Hi! I am a current sophomore accepted into the TAMS class of 2019. However, I learned that research opportunities are not fully guaranteed at TAMS, and am concerned about my level of success at TAMS and how well I would function within such an environment.

Would any ex or current TAMS alumni care to weigh in?

To clarify the dilemma, the high school that I currently attend is very good, and I am torn between leaving it for TAMS

Same, I recently got into TAMS and I’m so unsure of whether to go or not.

Hello, I am currently a student at TAMS, and I highly recommend the program. In order to get research at TAMS, you would have to email a UNT professor that you would be interested in research with. Most professors will let you into their lab if you demonstrate an interest in the field and are willing to work. Academic success at TAMS is actually easier to achieve than at most high schools because of the resources TAMS provides such as an Academic Counselor and various tutoring programs, not to mention, you will be living with some of the smartest people in the state who are more than happy to help you out!

With all that said, TAMS is not for everyone, but most people are able to find their place in the TAMS community

I highly suggest you attend!

Hey hey I’m a TAMS student as well! In my opinion, TAMS was one of the best decisions I have ever made - I’ve learned a lot in coming here, and not just in academics. TAMS teaches you to have better time management, responsibility, leadership, and communications skills through all the opportunities it offers. Granted, there are also pitfalls, but I think the advantages outweigh them by a mile. If you are truly passionate about the math and sciences and want to challenge yourself, TAMS is probably a really good choice for you. If you are unsure, be careful in considering the good and bad about coming here - do you believe you’ll have more to gain and learn from TAMS or your old high school? Yes, you’ll have to leave your old school and friends, but you make lasting connections with like-minded peers in an extremely supportive community here. Ultimately, it is your decision and I hope you do whatever you feel most comfortable with in a way that best aligns with your passions and interests. Best of luck in the future!
