Should I go to the Deans?

To make a quick story short, I basically have a psycho and physically violent roommate. He is by far the strangest and most insane person I've met in my life. Tonight my good friend got a call from his father stating that if I didn't stop attacking his son (I've never physically attacked him other than pushing him once to scare him a few months ago... he however has attacked me several times... and attacked other people several times... including slamming my friends face into a window a week ago), he would call up some of his gang friends and have them "hurt me really bad." Now, my friends and I were not going to go to the Deans (school ends in two days) at all until my friend got this disturbing phone call. I'm wondering what exactly I should do?

Does your RA know what's going on?
I wouldn't go directly to the Dean, but I WOULD get someone in authority and let them take care of it. Unfortunately you have waited so long now that with school two days from being over the school's administration probably will simply tell you to just wait the next two days until school is out.

depends...

if you take care of yourself then handle it on your own

if you can't take care of yourself then run to your bodyguard

Call the Dean. I mean if he tries to fight you then beat that a*s down. But you should call the cops or the dean, I wouldn't want him around anyone...just make sure you stay anonymous..espcecially if he has gang friends..

Can anyone here say "Virginia Tech"? Sounds like the guy has serious issues. Get to your Dean NOW.

Yeah, I brought up VT when my friend and I were talking about what to do. I think my roommate has serious mental problems (and so do his "friends" who live next door). He's made ridiculous statements on several occasions (such as going down to ghetto city nearby to "buy a shotgun" and saying that he "carries around a knife"). We don't think that my roommate is completely there and may have some psychological condition that no one is aware of.

I can't really stay anonymous because first of all my class is only about 180 people and my roommate knows that my friend received the call. He was talking on the phone to his dad supposedly and told him how he smashed my friends face into a window and the dad first asked "did the window break??"

You have a ton of viable resources at your disposal as near as I can tell.

Good luck to you.

Maybe he's just trying to show off. But even so, I would try to inform someone of the problems so that they have some kind of record on this guy. That way, if he does the same things next term, quick action can be taken.

Cho Seung's craziness dated back about two years before his murder spree.

Take this to heart.

Let me guess, he's an engineering type who plays violent video games?

Report this ******* immediately...

why would you NOT tell someone, imagine if this happened on the street, would you not call the police

it is ABSURD you have waited this long to do something about this, I don't understand the waiting, and ignoring the violent and illegal behavior of someone

I would document everything you are aware of, what he has done, said, threatened, physically hurt etc., and hand deliver it to the dean, skip the RA, there is no time

And say:

this guy scares us, we didn't do anything before because we thought we could ride it out, and as school is almost over, we have, but we are giving this information to you, so that when and if this man does hurt someone, at least you have been warned

Yes, we should have come forward earlier, but we didn't think

(if you don't report this, and someone is seriouslly hurt, then you will feel terrible)

(and can you explain why you did nothing for so long? if you can explain it, and show that it was a mistake to let this go, maybe we can convince others that reporting something like this is imperative)

Well the situation is really complex. First of all this guy is really small, like 5 foot 2. We think he definitely has an inferiority complex about his height. He constantly has his shirt off and he constantly seems to try to be proving his masculinity when it isn't even challenged. For example in PE floor hockey he was ABSOLUTELY CRAZY and would attack people during the game. The coach had to talk to him and tell him to the stop but he continued to do it. There are countless cases of this physical violence, but we always saw it as a "little brother trying to prove he's big like the rest of us" kind of thing. Therefore we never really took it seriously until about a week ago when he smashed my friends face into the wall.

For almost all of the first semester I thought he was joking around whenever he did stuff like charge after me with his tennis racket wielded as a weapon and peg tennis balls at me and push me. I mean come on, this guy weighs 40 pounds less than me and I know I can beat him up if I tried so I wasn't going to fight back.

But now it is clear that he has some sort of more serious psychological problems. A few weeks ago my friend wrote on the next room over's board "i have a knife" as a joke and my roommate supposedly freaked out and ran into the room screaming "why did you write that???!? now people are going to know I carry a knife!!!"

Weight and size is irrelevant when someone is carrying a weapon, and we all can see how easy it is to get a gun, and I am very serious about this

And weight and size are irrlevant when a person is unbalanced and has issues...

It just shows more people should have taken it seriouslly sooner....imagine if this guy was able to get hold of a gun...how scary would that be, and he may escalate to that...

Its not complex at all- you all focused on his size, and that was a mistake...a bully doesn't have to be big to do harm

He may in fact have an inferiority complex about his height. But if so, that simply exacerbates the problems and the dangers he poses. Most school gunmen (think Columbine) felt "picked on". It would not be unusual for someone to escalate his violence to "prove his manhood" (as this guy apparently did when he pushed your friend's face into a wall).

Report this IMMEDIATELY.

lol

5'2" and your letting him get away with everything? if he its you hit him back. it sounds like he is a bully.

is the guy an asian kid?

Dude, it sounds like somethings wrong with him. Stop describing this little **** ant on the internet and report him to the dean, ra, etc.

Most other posters have already said it: yes, go to the dean of students (I would say NOT your proctor, but the dean...you have two days left and no reason to waste time, esp. since your proctor would probably have to report it ASAP anyway). Alternatively, you could email both your proctor and the dean, explaining the situation. At Scripps, the chain is RA-->Hall Director-->Asst. DOS-->DOS. I don't know what exactly it is at Mudd, but I'd skip any student portion.

This is Claremont. Part of why you come to such a small school is for the privilege of being able to receive fast and effective attention in the unfortunate situation that such a scenario arises.
