Surf,
As a new UNC-grad who just stumbled across this thread, I would agree with some other posts that have encouraged you to think hard before you settle on UNC. UNC has its merits, which is why I came here, but I personally didn’t get what I would have expected to get out of the experience. I agree that it is overhyped, and the constant atmosphere of “UNC is the best place on earth,” especially to someone who’s been out in the big world, could get a little irritating, to put it mildly. And as a New Yorker who came to the South without any preconceived ideas and simply to attend a great school, the whole North/South thing was, to me, a major turn-off, since we honestly don’t care about that in New York. Academically speaking, it is said to be tougher, however there wasn’t really a class that fired my imagination, which is something I missed. And realistically speaking, the only classes where I really felt interested in the subjects were when visiting professors from Duke and Harvard stepped in for the day. Otherwise, I felt like it had a very processed atmosphere. I realize this post might sound overtly-negative, which isn’t my goal, since a lot of people come here and love it. However, especially as an OOS-student, I would weigh what you want in a school heavily. As stated, your GPA will probably take a hit, whether that is warranted or not. Just as someone who has gone through it, I would think hard, since if I had done so, I probably would have gone elsewhere. However, you could talk to someone else, and they might absolutely gush over this school, since some people do. It goes both ways.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply! I actually chose UVA as they gave me a good financial aid package and I really liked the school. I didn’t even make it down to Chapel Hill, as I heeded the advice that UNC is a bit overrated
